The device will feature a doughnut-shaped design, integrated cameras, and moving components.

For several months, reports have indicated that OpenAI's inaugural hardware item would be a smart speaker without a screen, intended to function as an AI companion. We already knew it would be capable of perceiving its environment, being transported throughout the home, and proactively assisting users. A recent Bloomberg report now offers a better understanding of the device's potential appearance.

According to the report, OpenAI’s first gadget will be doughnut-shaped and approximately the size of a hockey puck. It can be easily carried from room to room or placed on any convenient surface nearby. The device is anticipated to be relatively pricey, as the company is considering a price range of $300 to $400. A launch is currently scheduled for 2027.

A smart speaker designed for mobility

Previous reports have indicated that the device could manage smart-home devices, play media, respond to queries, handle messages, and utilize ChatGPT for daily assistance. Voice will be the primary mode of interaction, but the device will also include a camera and environmental sensors. These features could enable the AI to comprehend its surroundings rather than solely depending on vocal commands. Apple is considering a similar concept for future AirPods, which may incorporate built-in cameras to recognize the user's environment.

OpenAI also anticipates that the device will become increasingly familiar with its owner over time. Conversations might adapt based on a person's habits, preferences, and previous interactions, allowing the assistant to provide assistance before one feels the need to pick up a phone or type a prompt. Naturally, the device will have access to advanced models for more human-like conversations, as OpenAI has recently made significant strides in this area with the introduction of ChatGPT Live.

Its design could serve as part of the interface

Microphones and speakers will facilitate conversations, while lights will indicate when the AI is listening or replying. Some components of the device will also move during interactions, giving it the feel of a small robot rather than a passive speaker in a room. The resemblance that comes to mind is WALL-E or R2-D2. Their movements and reactions imbue them with a sense of life, awareness, and emotional presence. OpenAI appears to be aiming for a similar effect by giving ChatGPT a physical form and an expressive character.

I still have uncertainties about how all this will function in practice. A moving, doughnut-shaped AI companion might seem gimmicky if the design or movement is even slightly askew. OpenAI is partnering with renowned former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his LoveFrom studio on the device, which makes me hopeful that the final result will feel refined rather than toy-like.

OpenAI president Greg Brockman has already indicated that the company is developing a series of devices, and this compact companion could be the first to give ChatGPT a tangible presence in users’ homes.
