Ford has finally succeeded in delivering the electric truck it promised years ago for under $30,000.

      Ford has officially named its budget-friendly electric pickup the Fathom, setting its price at $29,945 and promising a 300-mile range.

      Ford has been hinting at an affordable electric truck for quite some time, and after a few initial months, I stopped expecting it, especially the anticipated price tag under $30,000. However, Ford not only met that expectation but exceeded it.

      Now, the truck has been given a formal name along with the price.

      What is it called?

      It’s named the Ford Fathom, starting at $28,350. With an added destination fee of $1,595, the final price comes to $29,945, slightly below Ford's promised $30K limit. This places it in direct competition with the upcoming Slate Truck, which starts at a lower price of $26,400 but features a reduced range of 205 miles and lacks many features present in the Fathom.

      In addition to the name and pricing, Ford has disclosed several other important details.

      Every Fathom model comes equipped with a standard-range battery, claiming to deliver up to 300 miles of electric range. It also includes bidirectional charging and a digital key as standard features. Furthermore, each model is "BlueCruise capable" straight from the factory, meaning it has the necessary hardware for Ford’s hands-free highway driving system.

      Pre-orders will begin early next year, with actual deliveries taking place afterward. Currently, production is slated for Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky.

      What sets this truck apart?

      The Fathom is the inaugural vehicle built on Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, tailored specifically to achieve lower price points without sacrificing usability. It features a large, single-piece aluminum casting at the front that reduces collision repair costs, while the battery pack serves as the vehicle's floor.

      Inside, Ford has incorporated Apple Maps for turn-by-turn navigation, along with standard support for CarPlay and Android Auto. With the new platform, Ford also promises more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, as well as both a front trunk and a traditional truck bed for added cargo versatility.

      By undercutting its own $30,000 goal while still ensuring more passenger space than a RAV4, the Ford Fathom seems poised for success, in my view. However, I would remain cautious until the anticipated production timeline is realized without any technical or logistical challenges.
