      Samsung’s latest mobile camera sensor addresses a longstanding challenge that high-resolution phone cameras have faced. Packing more megapixels into a sensor that maintains a similar physical size typically results in smaller pixels, which restricts the amount of light they can gather. The ISOCELL HPC, Samsung’s newest addition to its 200MP sensor series, introduces a reimagined pixel structure known as DeepPix, which seeks to overcome this issue. Samsung claims that this new design allows each pixel to capture 60 percent more light compared to its predecessor, leading to brighter highlights, deeper shadow details, and reduced graininess in HDR images.

      How DeepPix enhances light collection

      Every pixel has a maximum capacity for light retention, known as full well capacity, beyond which the image becomes noisy. DeepPix raises this limit. Building on Samsung’s existing Front Deep Trench Isolation technique, the company asserts that the new pixel architecture enlarges both the photodiode and the shared floating diffusion within each pixel to achieve this improvement.

      Two additional technologies facilitate light collection. A newly designed microlens layer, composed of high refractive-index materials, directs more light onto each photodiode, while an innovative anti-reflective coating minimizes scattering before light reaches the sensor.

      Reliable HDR across zoom levels

      Most phone sensors utilize HDR only at select fixed zoom levels, meaning image quality can drop significantly if you zoom beyond that range. Samsung states that the ISOCELL HPC extends single-frame HDR functionality across five in-sensor zoom steps, from 1x to 4x, aiming to retain the quality of cropped images more closely to that of the primary capture. In-sensor zoom is increasingly a focus within the industry, with Sony having introduced similar zoom capabilities in its own 200MP sensor last year.

      Video recording receives an enhancement as well, with support for 4K recording at up to 180 frames per second. However, this peak frame rate only applies with partial autofocus coverage. Engaging full-pixel autofocus brings the frame rate limit down to 120fps.

      Samsung has yet to specify which phones will incorporate the ISOCELL HPC, and no launch schedule has been released. Historically, new ISOCELL sensors have appeared in flagship devices shortly after their announcement, so there's a possibility it might debut with the Galaxy S27 Ultra early next year.
