Samsung is once more relying on MediaTek to drive its flagship tablet.
Samsung's top-tier tablets might go a third consecutive year without a Qualcomm chip. The company is reportedly making another significant investment in MediaTek for its premier Android tablet. After utilizing the Dimensity 9300+ for the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra and the Dimensity 9400+ in the preceding year’s Tab S11 Ultra, Samsung appears set to continue this trend with the next generation.
A recent Geekbench listing tied to the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra adds credibility to this expectation. The device, identified by the model number SM-X946B, is closely related to its predecessor's model SM-X936B. Its processor is likely to be MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500, which includes one prime core, three performance cores, and four efficiency cores, with the fastest core reaching 4.21GHz. This information rules out Qualcomm’s two most recent flagship Snapdragon processors.
Samsung's collaboration with MediaTek seems to be proving successful. The rumored Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra achieved 2,424 points in Geekbench’s single-core test and 8,446 points in the multi-core test. This shows only a slight improvement over the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra, noting that benchmark results from pre-production devices typically do not reflect final performance. The test device is equipped with 12GB of RAM, consistent with the entry-level configuration of the prior model, and Samsung may also offer a pricier 16GB version.
Although Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 maintains superiority in raw CPU performance and peak benchmark results, the Dimensity 9500 delivers robust sustained performance, improved thermal stability, and a more advanced on-device AI processor. These features are advantageous for a large tablet used for intensive tasks such as gaming, multitasking, and video editing.
The new processor may be one of the few significant updates this year; earlier reports indicate that the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra will maintain the 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, 11,600mAh battery, and 45W charging found in its predecessor.
The camera specifications are expected to remain similar, featuring a 13MP main camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP front-facing camera. The device is anticipated to launch with Android 17 and One UI 9, in addition to seven major operating system updates and seven years of security patches.
Samsung has confirmed the upcoming Galaxy Tab S12 series will be released later this year, with prior reports suggesting a September launch. However, the company has cautioned that increasing memory and component costs could lead to higher prices for upcoming devices, including the Tab S12 Ultra. If the price does increase, Samsung will need to provide compelling reasons for buyers to choose it over last year’s model.
