A Korean chip startup has increased its valuation to $2.2 billion, betting that the next wave of AI revenue will come from outside the data center.

      A little-known South Korean chip designer has reached a valuation of $2.2 billion. DeepX has completed the initial phase of its Series D funding round, which values the company at approximately four times its previous valuation. This round of fundraising is not yet complete.

      The first portion of the funding amounts to around $29 million, contributed by existing investors BNW Investment and DS Asset Management, as reported by Bloomberg. The company is currently in discussions to secure up to an additional $209 million by September. If successful, DeepX's valuation could rise to as much as $2.4 billion, marking a significant increase for a business that most consumers are unlikely to be aware of.

      Based in Pangyo, DeepX specializes in designing chip architectures optimized for AI. Its unique approach focuses on where these chips are deployed—not in massive data centers that handle the largest models, but at the edge, within robots, machinery, and smart electronics. In this context, efficiency in power and cost is more crucial than sheer scale.

      Challenging the data center model

      The bulk of investment in AI silicon has primarily been directed toward data centers and Nvidia's GPUs, which are at the center of the spending surge. DeepX is targeting an alternative approach. As AI technology extends into physical devices, each one requires chips capable of running models locally. These chips need to be affordable and function without relying on cloud connectivity for every decision.

      However, this market potential hinges on the actual deployment of such devices. DeepX has identified robots and smart electronics as its primary focus. The increase in valuation indicates that investors are confident in the company's ability to translate its vision into actual sales. In April, DeepX announced it had secured over 30 mass-production contracts with clients across eight countries.

      A competitive landscape with substantial funding

      DeepX is not the only player challenging Nvidia from a unique perspective. The UK's Olix is developing optical inference chips that bypass the most scarce components. Xsight has raised $300 million to produce networking chips that connect GPUs, while even Intel has provided its low-power chip technology to a startup. The edge AI sector is becoming the latest battleground.

      The underlying caution that looms over the entire industry remains. The expansion of data centers continues to overshadow all else, and on-device AI will only be viable at scale if robots and smart machines become commonplace. DeepX is banking on this outcome. For now, investors are willing to significantly increase its valuation to support this bet.
