      Apple's budget-friendly new iPhone might be on the verge of one of the most unusual specification upgrades seen in the company's recent times. However, instead of upgrading from 8GB to the more conventional 12GB of RAM, the iPhone 18e is expected to feature an atypical 9GB of memory.

      GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu anticipates that the iPhone 18e will come equipped with 9GB of RAM, as reported by MacRumors. This projection aligns with an earlier prediction from TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, lending more credibility to this peculiar memory configuration. Apple plans to introduce the device in March 2027 alongside the standard iPhone 18. The existing iPhone 17e currently has 8GB of RAM, which is the minimum needed to operate Apple Intelligence.

      Apple is reportedly developing RAM using six components

      According to Apple, the A20 package may utilize six 1.5GB memory dies, resulting in the unusual total of 9GB. In contrast, the existing lower-end iPhone 17 models are said to employ four 2GB dies for a total of 8GB. The added gigabyte could provide iOS with improved multitasking capabilities and enhance the functionality of Apple Intelligence features locally.

      However, this upgrade comes at a challenging time, as demand from AI data centers has strained memory supplies and led manufacturers to focus on more lucrative high-bandwidth memory production. Consequently, the cost of Apple’s most economical next-generation iPhone might experience a significant increase compared to its predecessor. Additionally, this enhancement could create a noticeable divide between the iPhone 18e and Apple's high-end models.

      An additional gigabyte may not unleash Apple’s top-tier AI capabilities

      Apple's more sophisticated on-device AI model is reportedly designed to require 12GB of RAM. This model powers features like improved dictation previews and more nuanced Siri voices in iOS 27, indicating that both the 9GB iPhone 18e and the standard iPhone 18 might fall short of accessing these functionalities.

      Other rumors suggest the inclusion of an A20 processor, a 6.1-inch OLED display limited to 60Hz, 256GB and 512GB storage options, along with a single 48MP rear camera. None of these details have been confirmed by Apple. The iPhone 18e appears set to be slightly better suited for Apple's expanding AI tasks. It remains uncertain whether the additional gigabyte will be sufficient for a device expected to remain relevant for several years.
