Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire will join Valar's board, and the company also obtained a $200 million credit facility.
In July, Valar reached a significant milestone by using a nuclear fission reaction to generate enough electricity to power an Nvidia AI chip and host a website. It is among only four companies to initiate a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction this year. Valar and Nvidia are now collaborating on a 30-megawatt nuclear-powered AI facility in Utah, marking the first commercial use of their partnership. Earlier this year, TNW reported on Valar's $450 million fundraising when the company was valued at $2 billion and had just achieved criticality with its helium-cooled microreactor.
"The construction of one reactor can be undertaken as a standalone project, but a fleet requires manufacturing," stated CEO Isaiah Taylor. The funding from this $1 billion round is aimed at facilitating the transition from demonstration to production at scale. These small modular reactors are intended to supply power to data centers, industrial locations, and military bases while remaining independent from the electrical grid. Currently, no such reactors are in commercial operation outside of China and Russia, but the concept is gaining interest as AI data centers increasingly stress global electrical grids. However, this sector has a reputation for projects that exceed budgets and timelines.
Valar’s reactor design incorporates a closed-loop cooling system that Nvidia claims could reduce water usage at facilities from 2.6 million gallons per megawatt annually to nearly zero. In response to community concerns about water and energy usage, Utah’s governor enacted new regulations for data center development in May. Nuclear-powered AI facilities that operate without grid electricity and utilize minimal water could address all the issues that have delayed traditional data center projects. The pressing question is whether Valar can produce reactors quickly and affordably enough to meet the demands of the AI sector, which is what this $1 billion investment is intended to determine.
