Waymo is implementing one of its most significant upgrades for passengers in its robotaxis, introducing Google’s Gemini AI assistant into the cabin along with a revamped in-car interface that transforms how riders engage with autonomous vehicles. Both innovations will first be available in the Ojai, Waymo’s specially designed robotaxi, as the company gets ready to increase accessibility for more public users. Instead of altering how the vehicle operates, this update emphasizes what passengers can experience inside, indicating that the next stage in the robotaxi competition may center on user experience rather than just driverless technology.
For several years, companies in the autonomous vehicle sector have vied for superiority in sensors, safety records, and the ability to drive without a human. Waymo now seems confident enough in these aspects to redirect its focus towards the interior, viewing the journey as a product rather than merely transportation from one place to another.
Gemini becomes your travel companion in the vehicle
The standout feature is Gemini in Waymo, a conversational AI assistant that passengers can activate by tapping a dedicated Gemini icon on the screen. Rather than being an additional driving system, Gemini acts as a voice-activated companion that can modify cabin settings, answer inquiries about local attractions, suggest places to visit, or offer information related to the trip.
Passengers can request Gemini to adjust the cabin temperature, locate a nearby café, or provide the historical context of a landmark during their ride. This experience is enhanced by Gemini Live, enabling natural conversations instead of relying on preset voice commands. Importantly, Waymo asserts that Gemini operates entirely separately from the Waymo Driver. While riders can ask it to initiate a pull-over, it lacks the capability to steer, navigate, or access the vehicle’s real-time driving information. The assistant also remains inactive until a passenger explicitly activates it, starting in beta with built-in privacy measures.
This feature may not be entirely unexpected. Mentions of a Gemini integration appeared in app analyses last year, but this marks the first official introduction within Waymo’s commercial robotaxi service.
The next competition in robotaxis is taking place inside the vehicle
Waymo has combined Gemini with the most significant redesign of its rider interface in several years. The new Ojai experience features what the company describes as a “lean-back” cabin, providing dynamic trip details, streamlined media controls, and an adaptive three-screen setup that adjusts based on passenger seating arrangements. For instance, a solo passenger in the rear seat will have access to full ride controls, while other screens automatically switch to simplified trip details or ambient media. A new Calm Mode minimizes distractions by dimming the interface to display only essential journey information.
This timing is noteworthy. Waymo already operates one of the world’s largest commercial robotaxi fleets, offering approximately 500,000 paid rides weekly across more than 11 cities. As autonomous driving technology matures, merely expanding coverage is unlikely to suffice as a competitive edge. The quality of the passenger experience is increasingly becoming crucial.
This transformation also highlights a significant contrast with Tesla. While Tesla remains focused on expanding its Robotaxi initiatives, Waymo is already investing in enhancing how riders utilize their time once the vehicle takes over driving. The company’s latest update implies that the future of autonomous mobility will not solely hinge on who can build the safest driverless car but also on who can create the most engaging environment for the journey.
