Runna’s new Adapt for Heat feature may significantly improve the comfort of summer running.
No more second-guessing how much to slow down when the heat makes it feel like a furnace outside.
If you've ever cut short a summer run due to unbearable heat, you are certainly not alone. A recent study by Runna, the highly-rated running coach app, found that 80% of its users modify or skip their runs in hot weather. To address this issue, the company has introduced a new feature called “Adapt for Heat,” which is the enhancement that summer runners have been requesting.
How does Adapt for Heat enhance your summer runs?
Running in the summer can be challenging. It’s often difficult to determine whether to follow your training plan or to reduce your efforts to prevent injury or serious heat-related ailments such as heat stroke. Runna aims to change that with this new feature. Rather than having to estimate how much you should reduce your pace on a hot day, Adapt for Heat calculates it for you.
The feature takes into account the local temperature and humidity and automatically adjusts your pace targets so you can still reap the same training benefits, albeit at a safer, more suitable pace. It also provides a color-coded hourly forecast, indicating exactly when your run will be manageable or when it's wiser to remain indoors for a bit longer.
What else is set to be added to the app this summer?
Starting today, Adapt for Heat will be available, along with two new features arriving in August. The Upcoming Plans feature allows you to schedule multiple training blocks in advance, mapping out your entire year from your upcoming 5k to that ultramarathon you’ve been discussing, all in one place.
Additionally, the updated Post-Race Recovery Plan automatically generates a recovery schedule as soon as you sign up for a 5k or 50k race plan. No more guessing how to transition back into running after crossing the finish line.
Runna’s Head Coach, Steph Kessell, explained the motivation behind these updates. “Recovery is a crucial component of every runner's journey to prevent training plateaus and reduce the risk of burnout or injury,” she noted, “which is why we incorporate it into every plan from day one.”
In combination, these updates illustrate that Runna is approaching running with a strategic mindset. It’s not solely about prepping you for your next marathon; it’s about fostering a healthy running habit that endures. Whether you're trying to navigate a heat wave or determine the next steps after a major race, the app is there to support your training journey.
