ChatGPT approaches 1 billion weekly users, seven months behind schedule.
ChatGPT is on the brink of reaching 1 billion weekly active users, a goal OpenAI aimed to achieve seven months ago. According to internal data shared by OpenAI and reported by The Information, this milestone will be reached in the middle of 2026, rather than by the end of the previous year as the company had hoped.
Despite the delay, this accomplishment remains significant. ChatGPT is among the fastest internet products in history to attain this level, achieving it in less than four years. Currently, approximately one in eight internet users engages with ChatGPT each week, seeking assistance on various topics from coding to health queries.
The growth trajectory has been remarkable. In February 2025, ChatGPT had around 400 million weekly users, which Sam Altman estimated would rise to 800 million by October. By February 2026, it had surpassed 900 million and became the quickest app to reach 1 billion monthly users in June.
However, the seven-month delay serves as a notable indicator that even the frontrunner in consumer AI is facing challenges in meeting its own forecasts. Sustaining growth at a billion users is considerably more difficult than maintaining growth at the hundred-million mark.
Competition is also intensifying. Google's Gemini and a series of more affordable Chinese alternatives are beginning to impact OpenAI's market share. While OpenAI still holds a significant lead, it is now working to protect that lead rather than expand it.
The significance of the user count extends beyond mere bragging rights. It is a crucial factor that supports OpenAI's valuation as it moves toward an IPO, demonstrating that consumer engagement, rather than solely enterprise contracts, will drive its computational resources. Critics like Gary Marcus caution that growth expectations may have outpaced the actual business performance, but achieving a billion weekly users remains a powerful statement, even if it arrived later than anticipated.
