Google's new tool, Gemini, is tasked with this sorting. It generates comment summaries that aggregate feedback from the entire document and highlights discussions that haven't been resolved. Additionally, it can draft responses and recommend changes, ensuring that the AI remains active even after the sorting process.
How Gemini identifies unresolved issues
Users can direct Gemini to focus on a specific reviewer or consolidate comments around a common theme. It can also uncover unanswered questions that are scattered throughout various sections, sparing editors from the need to revisit every thread to piece together a conversation they’ve already faced.
The outcome resembles an editorial overview rather than a final judgment. It clarifies the status of discussions and provides the editor with a practical starting point without determining who has the final say.
What occurs after the summary
Following this, Gemini is capable of composing a response within a comment thread or proposing alterations based on the feedback. If a reply requires additional material, it can locate a relevant Drive file and include the link.
The AI can also assess a document and leave its own remarks regarding clarity or narrative coherence. While this places Gemini in the realm of copy-editing, it does not implement its suggestions quietly; users must approve every recommended change.
Who is eligible to use it
These tools began their rollout on July 28 and may take up to 15 days to become available. Access is contingent on having a qualifying paid Workspace, Education, or Google AI plan, and Gemini for Workspace and its intelligent features need to be activated.
Gemini must have edit access to interact with a document’s comments. Viewers and commenters will not receive an AI shortcut through the discussions, even if they contributed to the clutter. If the feature is not yet available, check the settings and allow the rollout period to complete.
