      Android users were given an unusual privacy feature earlier this year that alerts them when smart glasses are nearby. Now, five months later, iPhone users have a similar option, and the name suggests a clear stance against Meta.

      AntiZuck is a $2.99 iPhone application that scans for Bluetooth signals linked to smart glasses and notifies you when it detects one nearby. It is compatible with devices such as Meta Ray-Bans, Snap Spectacles, Amazon Echo Frames, and RayNeo glasses, with the developer stating that more hardware is expected to be added.

      The app displays detected devices on a live radar-like interface, providing an estimated distance and a confidence level. It can also keep track of repeated detections, send local notifications, and allow you to mark familiar devices to stop them from triggering alerts. Additionally, it features Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, a Control Center toggle, and compatibility for assigning scanning controls to the iPhone’s Action Button.

      How does it work?

      There is a significant limitation: AntiZuck cannot determine if someone is actually filming or taking pictures. It scans for Bluetooth signals emitted by compatible hardware. According to its App Store description, smart glasses generally broadcast these signals when they are powered on, paired, or when opening their charging case.

      Independent testing has also shown that Meta glasses can become undetectable by the app once they cease actively broadcasting over Bluetooth. This same technology can recognize other Meta devices like Quest headsets, indicating that a detection does not necessarily mean someone nearby is wearing camera-equipped glasses.

      Everything is processed locally on the iPhone. AntiZuck requires no user account, does not show ads, and its privacy disclosure on the App Store indicates that the developer does not collect user data.

      Android users had the advantage

      The idea itself isn’t novel. In February, developer Yves Jeanrenaud released Nearby Glasses for Android, which utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy identifiers to detect compatible smart glasses and send notifications. The free, open-source app has since reached over 100,000 downloads on Google Play.

      Spending $2.99 might not reveal whether that stranger across the room is clandestinely filming. However, it does provide your iPhone with an additional method to alert you of the possible presence of camera-equipped glasses.

      Reports suggest that part of the delay is due to Apple’s engineering and marketing teams dedicating extra time to perfecting the product and addressing the privacy issues associated with wearable cameras.
