Volvo is launching Apple Music for more than 2 million vehicles through a straightforward OTA update.

The boundary between your smartphone and your automobile is increasingly indistinct. Volvo has declared that it is initiating an over-the-air software update that will integrate Apple Music directly into the infotainment systems of over 2 million vehicles worldwide. Rather than depending on Apple CarPlay or connecting an iPhone, eligible drivers can stream music natively through their car's built-in system, making Apple Music a part of Volvo's software environment.

This update will be available for a broad range of Volvo models, such as the EX90, ES90, XC90, S90, V90, XC60, S60, V60, XC40, EX40, and EC40, covering model years from 2020 onward. However, availability might differ based on the specific vehicle.

At first glance, the addition of another music streaming service might not seem particularly impactful. However, it underscores how modern automobiles are increasingly regarded as connected computing platforms, where new functionalities are introduced via software updates without the need for new hardware.

Apple Music becomes a built-in aspect of the driving experience

The primary benefit of having native Apple Music support is user convenience. Drivers will no longer need to connect an iPhone via Apple CarPlay or Bluetooth to access their playlists. Once they log in, they can explore Apple's library of over 100 million songs directly from the vehicle's infotainment screen, resulting in a more fluid experience during daily drives and extended journeys.

To commemorate this rollout, Volvo is also providing promotional access to Apple’s streaming service. New Apple Music users can receive up to three months free, while eligible returning subscribers who have been inactive for at least one month can claim two months free. This offer remains available until July 6, 2027.

Some of Volvo’s premium electric models are also receiving an audio enhancement. The EX60, EX90, and ES90 will support Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos when paired with the optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system, enabling compatible Apple Music tracks to be enjoyed in immersive surround sound. Additionally, Volvo has stated that the newly introduced EX60 will come with Apple Music pre-installed when deliveries commence later this year.

Cars are evolving into software platforms, not merely vehicles

This announcement carries implications that extend well beyond music streaming. Over-the-air updates have fundamentally transformed how car manufacturers introduce new features. What used to require a visit to the dealership can now be delivered overnight via a software download. Tesla popularized this model years ago, with traditional manufacturers gradually adopting a similar approach by treating vehicles more like smartphones that continue to develop after purchase.

For Apple, this partnership broadens the reach of its services business beyond phones, tablets, and computers. For Volvo, it enhances its reputation as a software-first automaker, especially as it builds vehicles on Google’s Android Automotive platform.

Consumers can also reap benefits. Native apps decrease reliance on smartphones, streamline the driving experience, and make infotainment systems feel more like an integrated component of the vehicle rather than mere accessories.

As software increasingly becomes a critical differentiator in the automotive industry, collaborations like this are likely to become more frequent. The next significant upgrade to your vehicle may not involve a more powerful engine or enhanced battery; it could simply be delivered while your car is parked overnight.
