XPeng unveils the MONA L03 in Munich, targeting the electric SUV market in Europe.
On Thursday, XPeng introduced the MONA L03 smart SUV during its global launch event in Munich, Germany. This model will be available in 65 countries and regions, including China, Europe, and various international markets, as reported by the Chinese automaker.
The launch represents a strategic step in XPeng's global growth since the MONA L03 is the company's first model to be released across international markets simultaneously, rather than making its debut in China first. By unveiling the vehicle in Munich, a significant center of Europe's automotive industry, XPeng demonstrates its intention to go head-to-head with established global car manufacturers.
In China, the MONA L03 starts at RMB 123,800 ($18,280) and is offered in both battery-electric (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) configurations. Pricing in Europe begins at €35,600 ($40,720), while the EREV version starts at €38,600 ($44,150), placing the model in the competitive mainstream electric SUV market of the region.
The MONA L03 prioritizes efficiency and driving range, with the all-electric version providing up to 650 km of CLTC range and consuming as little as 11.5 kWh per 100 km. The extended-range model offers a pure-electric CLTC range of 325 km and a total range of up to 1,380 km, achieving a WLTC fuel consumption of 4.96 liters per 100 km in charge-sustaining mode.
Artificial intelligence is central to XPeng's strategy. Each MONA L03 is equipped with XPeng's proprietary Turing AI chip, with the Max version delivering 750 TOPS of computing power and the Ultra SE variant achieving 1,500 TOPS.
The vehicle is built on XPeng’s second-generation Vision-Language-Action (VLA) model, utilizing a single autonomous driving foundation model adaptable to both Chinese and European driving conditions. Starting in 2027, XPeng intends to gradually introduce localized Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP) driver-assistance features to international markets.
The international version operates on XOS 6, XPeng’s newest in-car operating system, which supports multi-language voice recognition in English, German, French, and other languages, as well as understanding natural conversation and emotion-aware commands.
High-end cabin features include a 26.8-inch wide head-up display (W-HUD), a 20-speaker AI audio system, a front passenger zero-gravity seat, and 14-point massage capabilities.
Designed by former Ferrari designer Juanma López, the MONA L03 showcases XPeng’s Vital Flow design language and boasts a drag coefficient of 0.228 Cd. The SUV comes equipped with an all-scenario tire blowout stabilization system and driver incapacitation assistance.
The launch highlights XPeng’s greater global aspirations. The company continues to implement its In Europe, for Europe strategy by setting up an R&D center in Munich and collaborating with Austrian automotive supplier Magna for localized manufacturing. XPeng also plans to establish over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across Europe by 2028 to enhance its overseas charging infrastructure.
For XPeng, the MONA L03 is more than just a new vehicle; it serves as a critical test of its global expansion strategy. By selecting Munich for the model’s global debut and launching it simultaneously across 65 countries and regions, the company aims to bolster its presence in international markets.
However, with increasing competition in Europe, changing trade policies, and pressure from established local automakers, it remains uncertain whether XPeng can convert the launch of the model into sustained sales growth and increased market share.
