Hassabis: Having a STEM degree enhances your AI skills tenfold.

AI is transforming technology careers, but according to Demis Hassabis, head of Google DeepMind, it won't diminish the significance of a STEM degree. He shared these insights during a business conference in London, in a video released on Wednesday. Understanding the core principles of software development gives an advantage when working with AI, he explained to the audience, as reported by Business Insider.

"You absolutely need to embrace STEM and computer science," Hassabis stated. He positioned AI as the next evolution in programming languages, succeeding machine code, C, and Python, suggesting that in the future, communication may shift to plain English.

      Fundamentals remain crucial

Nonetheless, the fundamentals remain vital. “You still need to be knowledgeable about designing systems and adhering to best software engineering practices,” he noted. He emphasized that those with a deep technical understanding will leverage these tools far more effectively than those without such expertise.

Hassabis also advocated for the importance of the humanities. “Now is the time for fields like philosophy and economics,” he remarked. “We really need them in the upcoming world.”

      Wider pushback against vibe coding

Hassabis joins other technology leaders in challenging the notion that vibe coding renders coding degrees obsolete. Geoffrey Hinton, often termed the godfather of AI, made a similar argument to Business Insider in December. He indicated that mid-level programming roles "may not be sustainable for much longer because AI can handle that." However, he asserted that a computer science degree has far greater value beyond just coding and will remain relevant for an extended period.

Affirm's chief, Max Levchin, expressed similar sentiments, stating that the foundations of computer science distinguish quality code from “garbage” during a podcast discussion. Microsoft’s Brad Smith and others have provided similar reassurances to concerned graduates.
