Windows 10 22H2, the last version of Windows 10, will continue to receive OneDrive sync updates until October 10, 2028. Microsoft stated that this change "aligns OneDrive support with the Windows lifecycle policy and allows Microsoft to focus ongoing investments on supported operating systems." Additionally, Microsoft 365 file synchronization services will also be impacted for older versions.
Users on pre-22H2 versions will need to upgrade to Windows 10 22H2, switch to Windows 11, or utilize OneDrive's web interface, which is less convenient than desktop sync. Microsoft has been tightening its Windows ecosystem throughout 2026, making AI features optional for some users while removing support for others. Alternatives like Nextcloud support Windows 10 back to version 1809 and are also compatible with Linux. Nadella's restructuring of Microsoft is centered around AI-first products, and discontinuing support for older configurations is part of aligning resources with this focus.
