Sonos users are finally receiving a more user-friendly app, but the release has a drawback.
Enhanced navigation, speaker sorting, and new volume controls for iOS are gradually being rolled out and must be manually activated at first.
The Sonos app is undergoing a significant usability improvement. The familiar bottom tabs aim to facilitate navigation, while customizable speaker arrangements could streamline the management of a multiroom setup.
ShaunFromSonos, the community manager for Sonos, announced that the rollout may take up to two weeks for all users. Once available, users need to enable Improved Navigation in the app settings to access the new interface and sorting features.
What does the new layout address?
The primary update replaces the app’s slide-up menus with a standard tab bar. Home, System, and Search are now positioned at the bottom of the screen, clearly indicating which section is currently active.
Most mobile applications adopted this design approach years ago. Sonos users should now experience reduced time spent swiping when selecting a speaker or searching for music. An Android user also noted increased search speed across music services, although Sonos has not guaranteed a wider performance improvement.
How is speaker sorting implemented?
Speakers and rooms can be sorted alphabetically, by usage frequency, or based on whatever is currently playing. Users can also pin their preferred speakers at the top.
This flexibility becomes particularly valuable as a Sonos system expands. Households with multiple rooms no longer have to accept the app's default arrangement, making it easier to locate the desired speaker. These sorting options will only be accessible once the improved navigation setting is activated.
What other updates are included?
Sonos has revamped the iOS volume slider to expand during adjustments and display a numerical level. The Favorites feature now supports swipe-to-delete actions, and the Now Playing screen can adopt colors from the current album art.
The app is currently at version 87.00.36 on iOS and 87.00.35 on Android. It will install automatically once the phased release reaches a device. However, iPhone users can manually refresh the App Store updates page to check for it sooner. If the navigation feature is not yet visible, users should wait up to two weeks before seeking a solution.
