Apple is engaged in preliminary settlement discussions with the DOJ regarding its iPhone antitrust lawsuit.
TL;DR: Apple and the DOJ are in preliminary settlement discussions regarding the 2024 iPhone antitrust lawsuit. Apple has proposed several offers, but no trial date has been scheduled.
Apple and the U.S. Department of Justice are currently engaged in initial talks to potentially settle the 2024 antitrust case alleging that the company breached competition laws through its iPhone ecosystem, as reported by Bloomberg on Thursday. This year, Apple has made several proposals to resolve the matter. While discussions are ongoing, there is no assurance of reaching an agreement, and a trial date has not yet been determined.
The DOJ, together with 19 states and the District of Columbia, filed the lawsuit against Apple under the Biden administration. The complaint accused Apple of preventing super apps, discouraging external messaging and cloud streaming applications, limiting competing digital wallets, and obstructing smartwatch competition. In June 2025, Apple failed in its attempt to dismiss the lawsuit. Additionally, with the Supreme Court declining to pause its contempt order in the Epic case, a settlement with the DOJ might be more appealing for Apple to reduce its legal risks.
Apple has already taken steps to address some of the original allegations. It introduced a mini-apps program, allowed Messages to be compatible with the RCS standard supported by Google, permitted cloud-streaming applications, and opened the iPhone's NFC payment chip to third-party apps. Although the Apple Watch is still not compatible with Android, Apple has enhanced compatibility with non-Apple watches on the iPhone.
The Trump administration's DOJ is eager to settle antitrust cases inherited from the Biden administration. Stanley Woodward, the number three official at the DOJ overseeing antitrust matters, believes that settlements can conserve taxpayer funds and provide quicker relief to consumers compared to lengthy lawsuits. It remains unclear whether the attorneys general from the 19 states are included in the settlement discussions. Globally, regulators are urging Apple to make its platforms more accessible, and a DOJ settlement could establish a benchmark for the concessions Apple might offer before its other cases go to trial.
