ChatGPT can now complete what you've begun, and this is a more significant development than it may seem.
Shortly after introducing its new GPT-5.6 family — Sol, Terra, and Luna — OpenAI has made another announcement. This time, it is launching ChatGPT Work, a novel AI agent designed to do more than just respond to queries. Unlike traditional assistance focused on single tasks, it can handle entire projects that involve multiple applications, documents, and services.
If you have ever spent an afternoon switching between various applications only to complete one assignment, ChatGPT Work aims to eliminate that tedious process. The concept is to articulate the desired outcome and determine the necessary steps to achieve it.
Provide a goal and let it do the rest
Powered by GPT-5.6, ChatGPT Work can connect with the applications and files you select, gather the information required, and deliver completed work rather than mere suggestions. This could entail drafting a report, creating a spreadsheet, designing presentation slides, or even assembling a simple web application without needing you to oversee every command.

OpenAI suggests that this experience is particularly effective for actual work tasks that people spend significant time on. For instance, consider asking it to review last month’s business expenses or compile everything needed before an important client meeting. Instead of starting anew every few minutes, you can observe the agent’s progress, address queries as needed, reroute it mid-task, or approve actions before it proceeds. The company also positions ChatGPT Work as capable of managing extensive, interconnected workflows. For example, it could evaluate customer feedback, convert those insights into a marketing strategy, create the necessary materials, and then modify everything for diverse audiences without losing track of prior steps.
However, your AI doesn’t sign off when you do
One of the most intriguing features is that it can continue operating even after you close ChatGPT. Through Scheduled Tasks, it can run in the background, monitoring connected services like Slack or Microsoft Teams for updates, automatically refreshing documents or presentations, and informing teammates when significant changes occur. In theory, you could delegate tasks before leaving the office and return to a project that has already progressed. This marks a significant departure from the AI assistants most users are accustomed to today.

ChatGPT Work is being rolled out starting today for web and mobile applications for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers, with Plus and Business users expected to gain access in the coming days. OpenAI is also launching an updated ChatGPT desktop app for both Windows and macOS, integrating Chat, Work, and Codex into a single platform. While the desktop app will be available across all ChatGPT plans, including the Free tier, access to the new Work agent will depend on your subscription level.
