Xbox's recent restructuring may have sidelined another project, but it seems that Fallout enthusiasts could receive something even more thrilling. Per Bloomberg, Obsidian Entertainment, owned by Microsoft, has scrapped its planned sequel to Avowed, redirecting its efforts toward a new Fallout game. This upcoming project is expected to be guided by Josh Sawyer, the director known for the critically lauded Fallout: New Vegas, making this one of the most anticipated developments in the Fallout franchise in years.
A familiar figure is returning to Fallout
Sawyer is well-acquainted with the wasteland, having directed Fallout: New Vegas, which many fans consider one of the top entries in the series. Bloomberg notes that he was previously at the helm of an original RPG echoing Fallout’s themes and structure, but that endeavor has now been supplanted by a bona fide Fallout title aligned with Xbox’s larger strategy overhaul.
The report also mentions that Bethesda Game Studios will team up with Obsidian on the new project, which is significant since Bethesda has primarily focused on other titles since the launch of Fallout 76 in 2018, leaving the main Fallout series without a fresh installment for several years. In the meantime, Fallout 76 has continued to receive updates and boasts over 23 million players, while Amazon’s Fallout TV series is currently in production for its third season.
Avowed is the casualty
The new Fallout is reportedly at the expense of another RPG. Bloomberg indicates that Obsidian has canceled its planned sequel to Avowed, despite the project making good development progress and an announcement being anticipated within the next year. Ultimately, the sequel did not align with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's approach to investing more heavily in Microsoft’s most significant franchises.
While this news may disappoint fans of Avowed, supporters of Fallout have plenty to be excited about. If Bloomberg’s information holds true, it would mark the first time since New Vegas that Josh Sawyer has officially returned to the Fallout series. Given the lasting popularity of the original game, this is likely to be the most significant outcome from Xbox’s recent restructuring.
