Bloomberg reports that Obsidian is pivoting to Fallout as part of Xbox's broader gaming transformation.

Xbox's recent restructuring may have sidelined another project, but it seems that Fallout enthusiasts could receive something even more thrilling. Per Bloomberg, Obsidian Entertainment, owned by Microsoft, has scrapped its planned sequel to Avowed, redirecting its efforts toward a new Fallout game. This upcoming project is expected to be guided by Josh Sawyer, the director known for the critically lauded Fallout: New Vegas, making this one of the most anticipated developments in the Fallout franchise in years.

A familiar figure is returning to Fallout

Sawyer is well-acquainted with the wasteland, having directed Fallout: New Vegas, which many fans consider one of the top entries in the series. Bloomberg notes that he was previously at the helm of an original RPG echoing Fallout’s themes and structure, but that endeavor has now been supplanted by a bona fide Fallout title aligned with Xbox’s larger strategy overhaul.

The report also mentions that Bethesda Game Studios will team up with Obsidian on the new project, which is significant since Bethesda has primarily focused on other titles since the launch of Fallout 76 in 2018, leaving the main Fallout series without a fresh installment for several years. In the meantime, Fallout 76 has continued to receive updates and boasts over 23 million players, while Amazon’s Fallout TV series is currently in production for its third season.

      Avowed is the casualty

The new Fallout is reportedly at the expense of another RPG. Bloomberg indicates that Obsidian has canceled its planned sequel to Avowed, despite the project making good development progress and an announcement being anticipated within the next year. Ultimately, the sequel did not align with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's approach to investing more heavily in Microsoft’s most significant franchises.

While this news may disappoint fans of Avowed, supporters of Fallout have plenty to be excited about. If Bloomberg’s information holds true, it would mark the first time since New Vegas that Josh Sawyer has officially returned to the Fallout series. Given the lasting popularity of the original game, this is likely to be the most significant outcome from Xbox’s recent restructuring.

Criterion asserts that Burnout is not forgotten, but that realization is somewhat unsettling.

The success of Battlefield makes EA’s decision understandable, but it also creates a significant gap in arcade racing.

In a recent interview with IGN, Criterion reflected on its 30-year history, from Burnout and Need for Speed to its role in reviving Battlefield. The studio emphasized that Burnout remains a vital part of its identity but acknowledged that its future is now firmly tied to Battlefield. Appropriately, Criterion's new logo for its 30th anniversary features the tagline: “Criterion: A Battlefield Studio.”

On paper, this makes complete sense. Battlefield 6 has emerged as one of EA's most significant success stories in years, reviving a franchise that some had written off, achieving the largest launch in Battlefield history, and reminding everyone why the series was once the fiercest competitor to Call of Duty. As a Battlefield fan, I couldn’t be more pleased. As a fan of Burnout, however? That realization is a bit painful.

Don’t Starve Together is finally going mobile on iOS and Android on July 21, and I am genuinely excited about it. I have spent considerable time playing the PC version and it stands out as one of my favorite multiplayer survival sandbox games due to how quickly a standard session can devolve into complete chaos.

Klei Entertainment’s dark, peculiar, and unforgiving survival game is being adapted for mobile by Playdigious. Preorders and preregistrations are currently open, and the game is available at a 10 percent launch discount, reducing the price to $8.99 from the usual $9.99.

New research reveals that gaming doesn’t impair your brain, but compulsive behaviors can.

Your 100-hour save file might be innocent after all.

For years, parents have feared that extended gaming hours negatively impact their teenagers' brains. A new study indicates otherwise. It appears that the duration of gaming isn't what leads to genuine harm. Researchers found that the hours adolescents spend gaming had small positive correlations with certain cognitive skills.

More evident warning signs emerged among teenagers exhibiting symptoms of compulsive or uncontrolled gaming. Therefore, if someone experiences a loss of control while gaming, cannot resist the urge to play, or deceives others to continue playing despite adverse effects, those individuals are the ones truly at risk.
