Amazon's hidden 'Moonraker' initiative transforms Alexa into an AI agent.
Amazon is developing an agentic upgrade for Alexa, referred to as Moonraker. Internal documents indicate that this initiative is among the most expensive in the Alexa+ revamp. The company's aim is for Alexa to take action rather than merely respond. According to Business Insider, which cites internal planning documents, Moonraker is a previously undisclosed project that will enable Alexa to manage complex, multistep tasks.
This effort positions Alexa in the competitive landscape of AI agents. The AI-enhanced version, Alexa+, already facilitates ride bookings and ticket purchases via partners like Uber and Ticketmaster. Moonraker aims to take this a step further by executing multiple related tasks from a single request, such as “book me a ride and text my friend.”
This approach aligns with agentic products from companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, which are capable of web browsing and managing multistep workflows. The entire industry is pursuing the same objective.
However, the challenge lies in the costs involved. An earlier planning document described Moonraker as Alexa+'s “highest cost” initiative, projecting over $100 million in GPU expenses for 2026 alone. The document also suggested the possibility of postponing or scaling back the project to alleviate financial strain.
Some Amazon executives believe the team has overspent on the AI models that underpin Alexa. A source familiar with the situation mentioned that operational costs are becoming a significant concern, reflecting a broader industry reckoning regarding the expenses associated with advanced AI. This pressure also affects Amazon’s substantial AI infrastructure development.
To support Moonraker, Amazon has secured hundreds of Nvidia GPUs. Engineers have been testing the initiative using an Anthropic Sonnet model for enhanced reasoning and visual responses.
Alexa+ has faced several challenges along the way. Amazon postponed its rollout multiple times before expanding it in the U.S. earlier this year. Beta testers reported issues such as hallucinations and unusual behavior, including one instance where Alexa turned off a fish tank filter, resulting in the loss of fish.
Despite these setbacks, Amazon continues to move forward. In his most recent letter to shareholders, CEO Andy Jassy expressed optimism, noting that interactions with Alexa+ have doubled and orders have tripled. He stated, “Alexa is still early in its journey to be the world’s best personal assistant.” Amazon opted not to provide further comments.
This development is significant because voice assistants have long promised to manage tasks for users but have primarily functioned as timers. An agentic Alexa that can shop and take action on behalf of users could finally change that landscape, leveraging Amazon's vast array of devices. The critical question remains whether the potential benefits will outweigh the substantial costs. Amazon's own documents are already exploring this concern.
