I discovered a free universal TV remote app for both iOS and Android that is ad-free.
I've been searching for a universal TV remote app that functions effectively without being bothersome. Many that I've tried had some sort of drawback. Some required account creation before I could connect to a TV, while others displayed frustrating unskippable ads before even a simple action. A few restricted essential controls like volume behind a paywall, and others just didn't work as promised.
In my quest, I recently found AnyRemote, a free universal TV remote app available on both iOS and Android. It transforms your phone into a remote for your TV or streaming device without requiring a login or charging for the basic buttons.
How AnyRemote functions
AnyRemote operates via Wi-Fi, so your phone and TV must be on the same network. Upon launching the app, it scans for nearby devices and allows you to select your TV or streaming device from the list. If your TV requests permission, you can grant access on-screen and begin using your phone as the remote.
The app claims to support most major TV brands and streaming platforms, such as Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL, Hisense, Philips, Vizio, Roku, Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, Nvidia Shield TV, Xiaomi TV, and more.
Digital Trends
The app includes nearly all the features you would expect from a typical TV remote. You can control volume, change channels, mute, power on/off, manage playback, launch apps, use a D-pad, utilize a touchpad, auto-reconnect, and even mirror your screen. The keyboard input is particularly handy for entering passwords, email addresses, or search terms directly from your phone rather than painstakingly typing letter by letter on a TV’s on-screen keyboard. Voice control is also included, making it easier to search for shows, open apps, or operate your TV using voice commands.
The appealing aspect of the pricing
The pricing is where AnyRemote becomes even more intriguing. The app retains its core features for free, with no full-screen ads interrupting basic functions. Instead, it features a small banner ad at the bottom of the screen.
This ad can be removed with a paid option, but it seems that option is not available in my area at the moment. So for now, the free version means I have to deal with the small banner. There is an alternative if you’re seeking a completely ad-free remote app. TVRem offers a similar range of features without ads or paywalls, but it is exclusively available on iOS.
