TL;DR: Nadella promoted Jacob Andreou to EVP of Copilot after just one year. He is managing 11,000 employees and developing a super app, despite only 4.5% of 365 users paying for the service.

Jacob Andreou, the 33-year-old executive appointed by Satya Nadella to lead Copilot in March after one year at Microsoft, oversees over 11,000 staff. He has integrated the consumer and enterprise Copilot teams, removed duplicate product versions, and is working on a super app that unifies chat, coding, and a new agent-driven workflow called Autopilot, as detailed in a Fortune profile released Friday.

“This is one of the most fiercely competitive landscapes the tech industry has encountered in two decades,” Andreou stated to Fortune. “Given how rapidly technology evolves, the notion of a six to twelve month roadmap no longer works as it once did.”

The profile depicts Andreou as a technically adept leader who actively codes alongside his developers. He created Copilot Tasks, an AI agent capable of autonomously executing multi-step tasks such as food ordering, in approximately two months. This efficiency impressed Nadella, who reorganized Microsoft's entire senior leadership framework this year in favor of a startup-like engineering model.

Andreou’s promotion allowed Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, to dedicate his attention to proprietary AI models instead of everyday product management. The two collaborate closely but operate separate organizations. Suleyman indicated to a group of about 80 developers in March that the evolution of software development entails fewer people maximizing productivity through AI agents, according to Fortune.

The challenges are significant. Only around 4.5% of the 450 million Microsoft 365 users pay for Copilot, and its free consumer version lags behind ChatGPT. Microsoft’s stock has dropped by double digits in the past year as investors scrutinize AI expenditures and the company's dependency on OpenAI. Jefferies analyst Brent Thill remarked that the general sentiment towards Copilot is unfavorable.

Before his tenure at Microsoft, Andreou spent eight years at Snap, helping grow the platform from 80 million to 360 million daily active users. He then joined Greylock as a venture partner, supporting consumer AI startups. At Microsoft, he has implemented consumption-based pricing alongside seat licenses, reduced the number of Copilot icons that frustrated Windows users, and launched Copilot Cowork to rival Anthropic’s Claude.

Not everyone embraces the new culture. Current and former employees shared with Fortune that some teams now endure 12-hour workdays, experience daily stress to keep pace with Anthropic and other labs, and fear that the emphasis on speed could lead to compliance issues. Critics argue that Andreou can be excessively confident and still needs to establish his credibility in enterprise software, where the challenge is generating sustainable revenue at scale.

Andreou has outlined three main priorities: delivering a superior AI chat product, achieving leading model quality without delays, and offering a reliable means to integrate various models. The anticipated super app, set to launch by the end of summer, will enable users to switch seamlessly between personal and enterprise accounts within one interface. Additionally, Microsoft is considering hosting DeepSeek and other open-source models inside Copilot Cowork, while Nadella has cautioned against an industry reliance on only a handful of AI providers.
