Instagram aims to integrate algorithm customization as a fundamental aspect of the app rather than a hidden feature.
**TL;DR** Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, has introduced new methods to access "Your Algorithm," allowing users to adjust their content preferences with gestures and dedicated buttons for each Reel. However, users still desire a chronological feed of accounts they follow.
In a recent Instagram post, Adam Mosseri shared updates on "Your Algorithm," which enables users to indicate topics they wish to see more or less of. The initiative aims to integrate this feature more centrally into the Instagram experience.
The new prototypes include a pull-down gesture in the main feed to access the Your Algorithm menu, a swipe-up feature on individual Reels, and buttons beneath each Reel for users to express their desire for more or fewer similar content. Mosseri noted that some aspects are currently in testing, some will be available soon, while others may not be implemented.
Launched in December 2025, Your Algorithm initially focused on Reels and later expanded to Explore and the main feed. It provides users with an AI-generated overview of the topics influencing their recommendations, allowing adjustments that apply across Feed, Reels, and Explore collectively.
These new features simplify customization without needing to enter a settings menu, integrating control directly into the browsing experience. The per-Reel buttons offer real-time feedback on specific content without disrupting the viewing flow.
The most common feedback on Mosseri's post echoed the same sentiment, with one user stating, “WE JUST WANT OUR ALGORITHM TO SHOW THE PPL WE FOLLOW.” This highlights the ongoing tension between Instagram's focus on topic-based algorithm adjustments and the user demand for a chronological feed of followed accounts. While Meta continues to rethink its algorithms, particularly for younger users, the balance between content discovery and user curation remains a challenge.
Instagram faces competition from TikTok’s interest-driven algorithm and YouTube Shorts’ recommendations, both of which highlight content from non-followed accounts. Your Algorithm seeks to provide users with clearer control over this content delivery while maintaining engagement through recommendations. The effectiveness of using gestures instead of menus to enhance interaction is what Meta’s product teams are currently exploring across Instagram and Threads.
