Your Windows 10 computer has received an additional year of security updates. Here's how to obtain it at no cost.
Free Windows 10 security updates are now available until 2027, with three straightforward enrollment options.
If you're still using Windows 10, Microsoft has just given you some additional time. The company has quietly prolonged its free Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for consumer devices by a full year, setting the new deadline to October 12, 2027.
The unexpected aspect is that there wasn't any major announcement. Microsoft merely revised its ESU support page and added a note to a year-old blog post.
How to obtain free Windows 10 security updates until 2027
If you are already enrolled in ESU, your coverage will automatically adjust to the new 2027 end date, so you don't need to do anything further. However, if you haven't registered yet, you still have time. Microsoft has maintained three enrollment options. You can select from the following:
- Back up your PC settings to a Microsoft account
- Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points
- Pay a fixed fee of $30
Individuals in the European Economic Area can access it for free merely by signing into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account. A single license can cover up to 10 devices linked to that account.
It's important to note that this applies only to personal devices. Business PCs connected to Active Directory or managed through mobile device management software do not qualify, with the exception of devices registered via Microsoft Entra. Businesses have a separate paid ESU plan that runs until 2028.
Why is this update significant at this time?
A considerable portion of the Windows user base still does not meet Windows 11’s hardware requirements, leaving millions of PCs on the older version. Many users also choose to remain on Windows 10 for its lighter performance and absence of integrated AI features and telemetry.
This announcement coincides with Microsoft's recent increase in Xbox console prices and Apple's announced price hikes on its flagship offerings. For now, you have an additional year to plan your next steps while maintaining your security coverage.
If you long for the sensation of paper in the digital era, this app provides a textured look for your Mac’s display. A paper-like screen overlay could alleviate the intensity of lengthy work sessions.
Most screen comfort tools adjust color temperature. Apple's Night Shift, for instance, warms up the display, often giving everything an orange hue. Paperman offers a unique alternative by applying a subtle paper-like texture on the screen instead. This app, available for both Mac and Windows, aims to make your screen resemble paper, matte glass, or an e-ink display. It softens harsh contrasts and mitigates the glossy appearance of modern screens during prolonged reading or writing sessions.

Apple's upcoming MacBook Pro redesign might forgo the expected chip.
Apple plans to release a refreshed MacBook Pro later this year; however, as reported by Bloomberg, it may not feature a next-generation processor. Instead, the highly anticipated device may be outfitted with Pro and Max variants of the current M5 silicon. There was much speculation that the redesign, featuring an OLED display and touchscreen capability, would also introduce the M6 series processors. It seems that Apple has significantly altered its silicon strategy.
