Gemini Live can now retain information from previous conversations.
A subtle update introduces chat history recall to Gemini Live, a feature that has been available in the text-based version of Gemini for over a year.
Engaging with Gemini Live now allows for continuity, as Google has secretly enabled access to memory in its conversational mode. This enhancement permits the assistant to remember details from previous conversations when responding to new queries.
Details of the update
9to5Google identified this change on a Google support page, indicating that Gemini Live can now remember past interactions and also draw information from certain Connected Apps. This means Gemini Live can retain specific details shared in earlier chats, such as dietary preferences or important family anniversaries, alleviating the need for users to repeat information.
Currently, the feature is being rolled out in English within the US, with no announcements from Google regarding a broader release or support for additional languages.
Bridging the gap with text-based Gemini
While memory has been an integral part of Gemini’s standard chat experience for more than a year, Gemini Live has been functioning without it until now, creating a divide based on whether users typed or spoke to the assistant. This latest update bridges that gap, although one discrepancy persists.
9to5Google observes that the Personal Intelligence settings page on Android still indicates that memory is “coming soon” for Live, despite the feature already being operational for some users. This suggests a staggered rollout, which means you might not have access to the feature just yet.
Memory is a type of feature that tends to go unnoticed until it is absent. Gemini Live had been missing this capability long after competitors like ChatGPT's voice mode implemented it. Addressing this shortcoming enhances daily usability more effectively than most flashy updates do. If this rollout follows a pattern similar to that of memory’s introduction in standard Gemini, broader language support and wider accessibility should be expected in the upcoming months.
