Google is enhancing Pixel Screenshots with cloud AI technology while ensuring your data remains private.
The update enhances the Pixel Screenshots app with increased AI capabilities for searching saved screenshots, while ensuring your data remains secure and is not sent through regular cloud servers.
Google's Pixel Screenshots app is receiving a cloud-based AI processing upgrade with its newest update, moving beyond the strictly on-device method it has utilized since its debut.
On-device AI now has a cloud counterpart
In version 1.26.134.11 of Pixel Screenshots, the app's settings description has been revised from “Search your screenshots with on-device AI” to “Search your screenshots with AI.” The updated description specifies that processing can now occur both locally and remotely within a “secure, isolated environment.”
According to 9to5Google, the cloud aspect likely refers to Google's Private AI Compute framework, which was launched in November of the previous year. This framework employs hardware-secured infrastructure, including Tensor Processing Units and Titanium Intelligence Enclaves, with Google stating that it cannot access any data processed through this system.
The framework was developed to enable Google to enhance its cloud AI capabilities for Pixel features without routing user data through conventional servers, addressing a significant privacy issue linked to off-device processing. The phone connects to the cloud environment via remote attestation and encryption, maintaining security throughout the process.
A trend among Pixel applications
This change parallels a similar strategy Google adopted with Magic Cue and Recorder. Magic Cue received more timely suggestions through cloud processing, while Recorder broadened transcription summaries to different languages. The inclusion of Pixel Screenshots in this approach indicates that Google is generally moving its on-device AI features toward a hybrid model, utilizing Private AI Compute as a link between local processing and the enhanced capabilities available via the cloud.
For Pixel Screenshots, Google has not clearly defined what the cloud processing will enable, only mentioning that it will enhance user experience with the feature. On-device processing will remain functional without an internet connection, meaning the cloud component enhances rather than replaces local AI. The update is currently in the process of being rolled out and is not yet available to all users.
