Poland invests $11 million in ElevenLabs.
Poland unexpectedly created one of the world's most valuable AI companies and is now investing public funds to ensure that future successes remain within its borders. Vinci, the venture arm of Poland's state development bank BGK, has acquired an $11 million stake in ElevenLabs, an AI voice company valued at $11 billion. On the same day, it launched AI Lab Poland, a national initiative aimed at providing funding, mentorship, and global connections to the country's early-stage AI startups.
The investment's size is minor compared to the company’s valuation, which is precisely the intention; it serves more as a declaration of purpose than a conventional investment.
While ElevenLabs originated in Poland, it is not based there. Founded in 2022 by two friends from Warsaw, Mati Staniszewski and Piotr Dąbkowski, the company was reportedly created in response to the frustration with Poland’s practice of having a single monotone narrator dub every film character.
Now, ElevenLabs caters to around 100 million users across more than 70 languages, with clients like Salesforce and Adobe, and operates from abroad. By investing, Poland officially acknowledges this achievement, and ElevenLabs gains a stronger connection to a country where it aspires to expand, planning to increase its workforce in Warsaw from 60 to over 200.
The timing of this move is intentional. Europe is currently engaged in a tense discussion about its reliance on American AI, a conversation intensified when the U.S. restricted access to Anthropic’s leading models, providing European companies with a chance to voice their concerns.
Poland argues that it possesses the essential resources: it hosts two of Europe's 19 sovereign AI computing hubs and produces over 45,000 IT graduates annually. AI Lab Poland aims to transform these assets into successful companies.
The question remains whether this initiative will be successful. Government-backed startup programs have had mixed results, and an $11 million investment symbolizes rather than secures influence over a company valued significantly higher.
ElevenLabs has presented an appealing possibility for Poland: it has indicated it might go public within two to three years and is considering a dual listing in Warsaw. If this occurs, the investment could prove advantageous. If not, AI Lab Poland must demonstrate its capability to foster another success rather than merely celebrate the existing one.
