Martin Scorsese, the 83-year-old filmmaker known for works like Goodfellas, Raging Bull, and The Departed, has joined Black Forest Labs as a partner and adviser. This rapidly growing AI image generation company has been noted for its innovative technology.
According to the New York Times, Scorsese applied the firm’s technology during the preproduction of a new film and shared a video from his office in New York expressing his excitement. This development is particularly striking for an industry that recently struck for AI protections just three years ago.
Scorsese's use of AI isn't what you might expect.
Scorsese is leveraging AI specifically for storyboarding, which involves visually planning scenes before filming. He shared that after 70 years of creating his own storyboards, he has often found it challenging to accurately convey his vision to his cinematographer, production designer, and art director.
The technology from Black Forest Labs, built on open AI models known as FLUX, provided a solution to this issue. This startup, comprised of 70 employees and based in Freiburg, Germany, is currently valued at approximately $3.25 billion. Its technology is already integrated into features within Adobe, Canva, Microsoft, and Meta.
Despite some protests, Hollywood is beginning to embrace AI.
Scorsese’s shift reflects a broader trend, with numerous prominent figures moving in a similar direction. Amazon MGM Studios recently revealed three AI-generated animated series for children, while Netflix is establishing an internal studio called INKubator to create AI-generated animated content.
Additionally, Val Kilmer’s likeness is being revived through AI technology in the forthcoming film As Deep as the Grave, and an AI actress named Tilly Norwood is gaining attention in Hollywood, igniting significant debate about the industry's future.
However, not everyone is on board. Steven Spielberg has publicly expressed serious concerns, stating he opposes AI taking over human creativity in filmmaking.
Seth Rogen and Guillermo del Toro have also voiced their objections to AI at Cannes. The discussion remains unresolved, but Scorsese's support indicates that it has shifted from questioning whether to considering how AI will be incorporated.
