Instagram will cease overwhelming teenagers with repetitive, excessively unhealthy content.

Meta is implementing a solution for the issue of repetitive harmful content targeted at teens.

Instagram has faced criticism for its treatment of teenage users, and Meta is taking a more definitive action to address this. The company has announced that it is piloting a new feature on Instagram aimed at preventing teens from being continually exposed to the same type of content in Explore, Feed, and Reels.

This announcement is part of a larger initiative to enhance protections for teen accounts across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.

The concerns regarding Instagram’s algorithm have been accumulating for years.

Researchers created fake teenage profiles on Instagram and discovered that liking just one fitness-related post could drastically alter the algorithm's subsequent recommendations. The Explore tab quickly became inundated with weight-loss suggestions, extreme dieting material, and heavily edited body images. This trend was evident across profiles simulating teenagers of various ages and genders.

According to researchers from Harvard, Instagram’s algorithm specifically targets vulnerable teens, leading them into a harmful cycle of negative social comparison, which exacerbates body image issues, anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.

Most notably, internal research from Facebook revealed that 32% of teen girls reported that Instagram negatively impacted their body image while they were already facing challenges. The platform was aware of this but continued its practices.

To safeguard teens from harmful content, Meta recognizes that discussions surrounding nutrition, fitness, or anxiety management can be beneficial, but asserts that this content should be presented in moderation rather than repetitively. The feature currently in testing is intended to disrupt this cycle.

Additionally, the 13+ content setting, initially introduced last October, is now being rolled out globally across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. Since its launch, nine out of ten teens have adhered to this setting.

An independent evaluation by the online safety firm Alice indicated that teens using the default 13+ setting encountered 68% less mature content than they would on a leading competitor’s teen platform; those in the stricter Limited Content setting experienced 96% less.

Meta also gathered input from hundreds of thousands of parents, who reviewed over 15 million pieces of content. In a survey from late April, less than 2% of posts were reported as inappropriate by most parents. The stricter Limited Content setting is also set to be introduced on Facebook and Messenger later this year.
