Instagram will cease overwhelming teenagers with repetitive, obsessively unhealthy content.
Meta is implementing a solution for issues related to repetitive harmful content for teenagers.
Instagram has faced significant scrutiny regarding its treatment of younger users, and Meta is now taking more definitive action to tackle this issue. The company has announced it is testing a new feature on Instagram that aims to prevent teenagers from being continuously exposed to the same type of content in sections like Explore, Feed, and Reels.
This announcement aligns with a comprehensive global initiative to enhance protections for teen accounts across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.
Concerns about Instagram's algorithm have been accumulating over time.
Researchers created fake teenage profiles on Instagram and discovered that liking even a single fitness-related post could drastically alter the algorithm's recommendations. The Explore tab quickly became inundated with content related to weight loss, extreme diets, and heavily edited body images. This trend was consistent across profiles representing teenagers of various ages and genders.
According to researchers from Harvard, Instagram’s algorithm tends to draw vulnerable teens into a harmful cycle of negative social comparisons, which can lead to worsened body image, anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.
Furthermore, internal research from Facebook revealed that 32% of teen girls stated that Instagram made them feel worse about their bodies, especially during challenging times. The platform was aware of this yet continued its practices.
What steps Meta is taking to safeguard teens from harmful content:
Meta acknowledges that content concerning nutrition, fitness, or anxiety management can be beneficial, but insists that it should be presented in a balanced way rather than repetitively. The new feature under testing is specifically focused on disrupting that cycle.
Additionally, the 13+ content setting, which was introduced last October, is now being rolled out globally on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. Since its launch, nine out of ten teens have remained within this setting.
An independent evaluation by the online safety firm Alice found that teens using the default 13+ setting encountered 68% less mature content compared to a leading competitor’s teen platform. Those in the more restrictive Limited Content setting saw 96% less mature content.
Meta also gathered feedback from hundreds of thousands of parents, who reviewed over 15 million content posts. A survey conducted at the end of April indicated that fewer than 2% of posts were deemed inappropriate by most parents. The more restrictive Limited Content setting is expected to be available on Facebook and Messenger later this year.

X, which has emerged as a platform for often unnecessary outrage, is looking to capitalize on the trend of reaction videos by enabling users to record them directly within the app. This feature allows creators to express their reactions with video responses on X posts, offering them even more avenues for self-expression.
