Citroen is reintroducing the legendary 2CV as an electric vehicle with a price tag of less than $18,000.
The legendary Citroën 2CV is making a comeback as an electric vehicle priced under $18,000.
Finding affordable electric vehicles has become surprisingly challenging. However, Citroën is looking to its rich history for a solution. The company has announced the return of the cherished Citroën 2CV as a fully electric car, more than 30 years after production of the original ceased. Citroën CEO Xavier Chardon revealed this revival at a Stellantis investor event in Michigan, stating that the new 2CV will be entirely electric, manufactured in Europe, and retail for under €15,000, which is approximately $17,400.
The people’s car goes electric
The original 2CV debuted at the Paris auto show on October 7, 1948, and became one of the most recognizable everyday vehicles in France. Known for its practicality, simplicity, and affordability, it gained the affectionate nickname “la deudeuche.” Production of the car ended in Portugal in 1990, partly due to stricter European emissions regulations.
Now, Citroën aims to carry that essence into the electric vehicle age. Chardon mentioned that the 1948 version granted “freedom of mobility to millions,” and the new iteration seeks to “democratize electric mobility.”

According to reports from AFP, Citroën has already showcased the exterior design to journalists and analysts. The updated 2CV is said to retain key design elements from the original, such as the domed ribbed hood and protruding headlights. Modern safety and road regulations could necessitate design adjustments before mass production begins.
A prototype of the vehicle is slated to be unveiled at the Paris auto show in October, with retail sales anticipated in about two years. Citroën plans to primarily market the vehicle in Europe. While specific details remain limited, the main point is evident: the people’s car is evolving into an EV that will be accessible to the general public.
