Android's latest Pause Point feature introduces a 10-second delay to help curb mindless scrolling.

Pause Point offers a brief opportunity to rethink opening a distracting app, featuring built-in breathing exercises and alternative suggestions.

Google is introducing a new feature called Pause Point as part of Android's Digital Wellbeing suite. This tool interrupts mindless scrolling by presenting a 10-second check-in before a designated distracting app is launched.

A balance between timers and lockouts

Pause Point differs from the current app timers on Android. Instead of restricting access to an app after a predetermined time, it intervenes when you attempt to open a specified app and briefly provides an option to reconsider. During this pause, you can engage in a breathing exercise, set a timer, view a slideshow of your memories, or opt for a suggested alternative like reading a book.

      Google

The feature is also designed to be difficult to dismiss easily. To completely disable Pause Point, users must restart their phone, adding enough resistance to make the decision feel intentional. According to Google, Pause Point aims to make app usage more deliberate. This 10-second interruption gives users the chance to determine if their desire to open an app is a conscious choice or simply a habit.

      The significance of this feature

Google introduced Digital Wellbeing tools nearly ten years ago, but app timers and usage dashboards never gained widespread popularity. Pause Point represents the most significant rethinking of these tools in recent years. Instead of requiring users to set limits in advance and depend on willpower, it operates in real-time when the urge to scroll mindlessly arises.

For Android users who find strict lockouts too disruptive yet find standard timers too easy to overlook, Pause Point presents a pragmatic compromise. Whether a 10-second pause can effectively disrupt deeply ingrained scrolling habits remains to be seen. Google has not yet released details about the feature's rollout.
