      Google has revealed extensive Instagram camera integration, AI-enhanced features in Edits, and the introduction of Screen Reactions with Android 17.

      Google has unveiled a range of updates tailored for creators as part of Android 17 during today's Android Show I/O Edition. These new tools are designed for capturing, editing, and sharing content specifically for social media creators and professional filmmakers.

      Instagram receives a significant enhancement

      Google has collaborated with Meta to improve the camera experience on Instagram for flagship Android devices. Android 17 will introduce Ultra HDR capture, playback, integrated video stabilization, and Night Sight capabilities to Instagram, utilizing the same processing pipeline as the device's default camera app. This enhancement is part of Android 17’s wider camera upgrades for third-party applications, allowing advanced hardware features like Super Resolution for apps such as Instagram.

      Google also asserts that videos shot and uploaded to Instagram from Android flagship devices will match or exceed the quality of the leading competitor, based on tests using the Universal Video Quality model, "an AI framework designed to evaluate how we perceive video quality."

      The Edits app on Instagram will include two new Android-exclusive AI features: Smart Enhance and Sound Separation. Smart Enhance will upscale images and videos with a single tap, while Sound Separation will allow users to extract individual audio tracks, making it possible to isolate dialogue from noisy backgrounds without needing to re-shoot.

      Additional tools for dedicated creators

      Google is simplifying the process for creators to produce reaction videos with a new feature called Screen Reactions. This will enable users to simultaneously record their face and the screen, eliminating the need for a green screen or a second device. This feature will first launch on Pixel devices this summer.

      Adobe Premiere is also set to arrive on Android this summer, offering exclusive templates and effects for YouTube Shorts, which were introduced on the iOS app earlier this year.

      For professional video content, support for the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec—a storage-efficient format co-developed by Google and Samsung—is expected to be available on more Snapdragon 8 Elite-powered flagships later this year. It is already accessible on the Galaxy S26 Ultra and the Vivo X300 Ultra.

      Historically, Android has lagged behind the iPhone in Instagram video quality, and these updates represent Google's most direct effort to address that issue.
