The CEO of Nvidia will not be part of the list of US executives traveling to Beijing for the Trump-Xi summit. Among those attending are Tim Cook of Apple and Elon Musk of Tesla, with the trip focusing on agriculture, manufacturing, and aviation.
According to a source familiar with the planning, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang will not accompany President Donald Trump’s business delegation to China this week, as reported by Reuters on Monday.
More than a dozen US executives, including Cook and Musk, are set to travel with the president, who is expected to arrive in Beijing on May 13 for formal meetings on May 14 and 15. During this visit, Trump will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The White House is said to be prioritizing agriculture, manufacturing, and commercial aviation in the agenda, including potential orders for Boeing aircraft, rather than addressing the AI chip-export disputes that have dominated US-China tech policy for the past three years.
Huang has been a notably visible figure in the AI industry during the past year, appearing with the president at various events and accompanying Trump on previous overseas trips, including to the Gulf. Therefore, NVIDIA’s absence from the China delegation is interpreted as a deliberate decision rather than an accidental omission.
The issue of chip exports continues to be a key point of contention in US-China technology relations. NVIDIA's most advanced GPUs are subject to US export restrictions for sale in China; although the company has developed compliant variants, it continues to advocate for closer alignment between national security goals and commercial interests. Huang and Trump met in March to discuss the export limitations.
Huang has not publicly commented on the delegation list, and NVIDIA’s communications team declined to address inquiries from Reuters. Several analysts on Wall Street indicated that Huang's absence diminishes the likelihood of any significant US-China announcement regarding AI chip access during this trip.
In pre-market US trading on Monday, NVIDIA shares saw a modest increase, with wider semiconductor indices performing well. Analysts expressed mixed views on the implications of Huang's exclusion: some saw it as beneficial for Nvidia’s independence from political matters, while others considered it a setback for the company's quieter lobbying efforts to relax export restrictions.
Despite the export controls, China is a crucial market for NVIDIA. The company has seen continued growth in its data center revenue from the region under regulated parts of the H20 class, and the introduction of newer regulated variants is anticipated to further support shipments.
Bloomberg’s information on the China-tier policy framework is still unclear, and a meaningful agreement on chip access would need a relaxation of export controls or a structural concession from Beijing regarding related trade issues.
The inclusion of Cook and Musk reflects the administration's preferred balance of large US consumer electronics and electric vehicle representation with Chinese manufacturing and consumption.
Apple’s iPhone supply chain remains significantly reliant on China despite recent diversifications into India and Vietnam. Tesla operates its Shanghai gigafactory at full capacity, navigating the EV incentive policies that the Chinese government has rolled back in recent months.
Boeing, also included in the delegation, is reportedly the target of a potential announcement regarding commercial aircraft orders during the visit. Chinese domestic aircraft programs continue to grow, but there remains strong demand from Chinese carriers for Boeing's widebody airplanes.
Trump's delegation is scheduled to depart on Tuesday, with the China trip planned to last four days.
