Jensen Huang does not participate in Trump's China business delegation.

The CEO of Nvidia will not be part of the group of U.S. executives visiting Beijing for the Trump-Xi summit. Joining the delegation are Apple's Tim Cook and Tesla's Elon Musk, with the primary focus of the trip said to be on agriculture, manufacturing, and aviation.

According to a source familiar with the arrangements, Reuters reported on Monday that Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang would not accompany President Donald Trump on his business delegation to China this week.

Tim Cook and Elon Musk are among over a dozen U.S. executives traveling with the president, who is set to arrive in Beijing on May 13 for formal meetings on May 14 and 15. During this visit, Trump is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The White House has reportedly shifted the agenda to focus on agriculture, manufacturing, and commercial aviation, including potential Boeing aircraft orders, rather than the disputes over AI chip exports that have been central to U.S.-China technology policy for the past three years.

Over the past year, Huang has been a notably visible figure in the AI industry concerning the Trump administration. He has appeared with the president at various events and has traveled on previous overseas trips with Trump, including to the Gulf. As a result, Huang's absence from the China delegation is interpreted as a deliberate decision rather than an unintentional omission.

The issue of chip exports remains the main point of tension in U.S.-China technology policy. NVIDIA's most advanced GPUs are subject to U.S. export controls that restrict sales to China; while the company has created variants that comply with regulations, it has continued to advocate for greater alignment between national-security interests and commercial operations. In March, Trump and Huang discussed export limitations.

Huang has not publicly addressed the delegation list, and NVIDIA’s communications team declined to comment when approached by Reuters.

Several analysts from Wall Street indicated that Huang's absence diminishes the likelihood of any significant announcement regarding AI chip access from the U.S.-China meetings during the trip. NVIDIA shares saw a modest increase in pre-market trading in the U.S. on Monday, with overall semiconductor indices performing better. Analysts have mixed opinions regarding the strategic implications: some see the exclusion as beneficial for Nvidia’s distancing from political affairs, while others consider it a setback for the company’s quieter lobbying efforts to relax export restrictions.

Despite the export controls, China remains a vital market for Nvidia. The company’s revenue from data centers in the country has continued to rise with H20-class regulated products, and the introduction of newer regulated variants is anticipated to bolster ongoing shipments.

The Bloomberg reports on the regulatory framework regarding China remain unclear; reaching a significant agreement on chip access would necessitate either a relaxation of export controls or a structural concession from Beijing concerning related trade matters.

The inclusion of Cook and Musk indicates the administration’s preference for a blend of significant U.S. consumer electronics and electric vehicle presence alongside Chinese manufacturing and consumption. Apple's iPhone supply chain is still heavily reliant on China, despite recent moves to diversify into India and Vietnam, while Tesla continues to operate its Shanghai gigafactory at scale, navigating the recent rollback of electric vehicle incentives by the Chinese government.

Boeing, also part of the delegation, is reportedly expected to announce a potential commercial aircraft order during the visit. Although China's domestic aircraft initiatives are expanding, there remains substantial demand from Chinese carriers for Boeing widebody aircraft.

Trump’s delegation is scheduled to depart on Tuesday, and the trip to China will last for four days.
