Google has just unveiled a new type of laptop that integrates Gemini throughout.

      Google's new Googlebook platform places Gemini at the forefront of every laptop interaction, encompassing everything from the cursor to the desktop, with devices from leading PC manufacturers expected to launch this fall.

      Google aims for Gemini to be the central processing unit of your next laptop, announcing an entirely new category to facilitate this goal. Named Googlebook, this fresh laptop platform integrates Gemini into the core user experience, with products from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo anticipated later this fall.

      What sets it apart

      The foundation of the Googlebook experience will be Magic Pointer—a feature developed with Google DeepMind that connects Gemini directly to your cursor. As you hover over any item on the screen, Gemini will provide relevant suggestions.

      For instance, pointing to a date in an email prompts it to offer scheduling options for a meeting. If you select two images, it can combine them. The most convenient aspect is that you won’t need to download an additional app or enter a prompt manually. This functionality aims to provide AI assistance at every interaction on the laptop, rather than only when specifically sought out.

      Googlebooks will also feature Create your Widget, allowing users to generate custom desktop widgets by simply describing their needs in natural language. This tool will gather information from Gmail, Google Calendar, and the web to create a tailored dashboard. Google claims you will be able to consolidate flight information, hotel bookings, and trip countdowns into a single widget on your desktop.

      Effortless Android integration

      Google states that Googlebooks will integrate smoothly with your Android smartphone. A feature named Quick Access will enable you to browse, search, and directly insert files from your phone into the laptop’s file browser without any necessity for transfers. Additionally, you will be able to run apps from your Android phone directly on the laptop without downloading them or managing emulated touch controls.

      Each Googlebook will include a glowbar—a light strip on the device that will serve as a visual identifier and a functional component. Google indicates that devices will come in various shapes and sizes and operate on "a modern OS designed for Intelligence," likely referring to Aluminium OS, the company's Android-based system combining ChromeOS and Android into a unified desktop OS. Specific details regarding specifications and pricing are yet to be disclosed.

      Google has revealed limited information beyond the announced software features, so the practical appeal of the platform will largely depend on what its manufacturing partners deliver this fall.
