SAP announces its Autonomous Enterprise featuring over 200 AI agents and a partnership with Anthropic at Sapphire 2026.

TL;DR: At Sapphire 2026, SAP introduced the Autonomous Enterprise, incorporating over 200 AI agents into its main business applications and collaborating with Anthropic to use Claude as its key reasoning engine, asserting that controlling business process logic is more crucial than owning the AI model as its stock drops 41 percent.

Christian Klein opened the SAP Sapphire keynote on Monday by posing a question that the CEO of Europe's most valuable tech company shouldn't have to ask: “Will SAP still be a software company in the future?” The reply, provided by SAP’s AI assistant Joule at the conclusion of the presentation, indicated that the company is evolving into a business AI entity. The question was rhetorical, while the 41 percent drop in SAP’s stock price over six months was quite real.

SAP revealed what it terms the Autonomous Enterprise, a comprehensive platform that includes over 50 domain-specific AI assistants coordinating more than 200 specialized agents in areas such as finance, supply chain, procurement, human resources, and customer experience. They also announced a partnership with Anthropic to integrate Claude as a primary reasoning engine throughout its AI-enabled offerings, alongside a 100 million euro partner fund aimed at speeding up deployment. Additionally, they launched seven specialized Industry AI solutions and showcased agent-led migration tools claimed to reduce ERP transformation processes by over 35 percent.

This announcement marks the largest AI product launch in SAP’s 53-year history and undeniably serves as a survival strategy.

      The context

SAP’s stock has dropped more than a third in value since reaching a peak of 306.60 euros in July 2025. An earnings call in January 2026 resulted in a 15 percent fall in stock price in a single day, the largest drop since 2020, after cloud revenue projections failed to meet expectations. In April, the Q1 2026 results showed cloud revenue growing by 27 percent at constant currencies to 5.96 billion euros, yet total revenue of 9.56 billion fell short of analyst predictions, causing another six percent decline in stock during after-hours trading.

The issue does not lie with SAP’s cloud business, as the Cloud ERP Suite's revenue increased by 30 percent at constant currencies, and the current cloud backlog stands at 21.9 billion euros. The concern is the market's assessment of future cloud revenue potential as AI agents begin to supplant the human users generating per-seat license fees.

In February, Workday's chief technology officer transitioned from his executive position to a technical staff role at Anthropic, highlighting a talent shift from traditional enterprise software to AI companies developing tools intended to replace it. That same month, a flurry of agent-driven AI product releases from Anthropic, Salesforce, and Google led to a roughly 285 billion dollar loss in SaaS company valuations in just 48 hours, an event now referred to as the SaaSpocalypse.

SAP's market capitalization has plummeted from over 300 billion dollars to approximately 200 billion dollars, as the company responsible for managing the global economy’s back office faces a re-evaluation, suggesting it may not handle the future's back office.

      The bet

The Autonomous Enterprise is SAP’s response. This architecture consists of three layers: the SAP Business AI Platform, which offers the infrastructure for creating, contextualizing, and governing AI agents; the Autonomous Suite, which integrates these agents into core business applications; and Joule Work, a new interface that replaces traditional step-by-step navigation with a conversational format, allowing users to articulate business outcomes while Joule coordinates workflows, data, and agents to achieve them.

A key example is the Autonomous Close Assistant, said to reduce the financial closing process duration from weeks to days by automating journal entries, reconciliations, and error resolutions across the entire cycle. This assistant does not replace finance teams; rather, it orchestrates the agents executing tasks currently handled manually by finance teams, while the humans supervise, approve, and control.

This distinction is important. SAP is not marketing AI that eliminates enterprise software; it is offering AI that allows enterprise software to perform more tasks currently done by humans. The agents operate within the same approval workflows, compliance frameworks, and governance structures that already regulate human decisions in SAP systems. The interdependency does not weaken; it strengthens.

The collaboration with Anthropic positions Claude as a primary reasoning and agentic feature across SAP’s solution offerings. This integration extends beyond a standard API partnership, as Anthropic and SAP will work together to develop custom agents and workflows tailored for sectors such as public services, healthcare, education, life sciences, and utilities.

Additionally, SAP announced enhanced collaborations with Microsoft—integrating RISE with SAP into Azure more deeply; Amazon Web Services—facilitating zero-copy data sharing between SAP Business Data Cloud and Amazon Athena; Google Cloud—achieving bidirectional agent-to-agent interoperability; and Palantir—whose AIP platform will assist with data migration scenarios alongside SAP’s agent-led transformation toolkit.
