Your next budget-friendly phone is set to receive a significant upgrade.

Qualcomm has introduced two new mobile processors, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, which is great news if you're searching for a mid-range smartphone.

Both chipsets aim to bring features that have only been available in high-end phones down to more affordable models. These processors will enable capabilities such as AI-enhanced camera functions, smoother displays, improved gaming experiences, and extended battery life for the upcoming range of budget-friendly smartphones.

What does this entail for your daily phone usage?

A major improvement with both chipsets is the Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI. The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 boasts 20% quicker app launches and 18% reduced screen stutter. Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 delivers an even greater enhancement, with 43% faster app launches and 25% less screen stutter. Essentially, your phone will feel more responsive and less sluggish.

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 will also introduce AI-enhanced camera capabilities, a 21% boost in GPU performance, and support for Wi-Fi 7. According to Qualcomm’s Chenwei Yan, Senior Vice President of Product Management, their objective was to achieve “the right balance of performance, power efficiency, and connectivity” to enhance user experiences globally.

If the proposed performance figures hold up, it appears that Qualcomm's new chipsets will meet these aims.

Is the budget-friendly chip worth getting enthusiastic about?

While the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 may steal the spotlight, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is the more thrilling release for me. It features a 77% increase in GPU performance and can achieve 90FPS in gameplay. It also supports Dual SIM Dual Active 5G, enabling you to use two 5G connections without any compromises.

Given the significant price increases in smartphones due to shortages in RAM, PCBs, and other components, an efficient budget chipset will help ensure that users have access to well-rounded smartphones at reasonable prices.

A questionable leak regarding the iPhone 18 Pro reveals a smaller Face ID cutout on the display.

The iPhone 18 Pro’s Dynamic Island rumors are generating buzz once again, fueled by recent CAD renders shared by the X account @earlyappleleaks. The image indicates that the pill-shaped cutout at the top of the iPhone’s display is significantly smaller than that of the iPhone 17 Pro models. However, the account is relatively new and lacks a credible history at this point. Nonetheless, these renders are noteworthy as they align with early speculation about a less obtrusive Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro models.

Apple might surprise us with unexpected repairability features in its foldable iPhone.

The upcoming foldable iPhone, potentially named the iPhone Ultra, may offer more than just a larger form factor. A recent post from tipster Instant Digital on Weibo suggests that this device could also be simpler to open, repair, and disassemble compared to other foldable phones. Foldable devices are notoriously challenging to repair due to their compact designs, delicate displays, and complex wiring. Even the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, regarded as one of the more repairable foldables, received only a 4 out of 10 repairability rating from iFixit, illustrating the difficulties associated with foldable repairs.
