      Recent research from Samsung could change this situation. The company has conducted a joint clinical study with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in Korea, which has confirmed that the Galaxy Watch 6 can predict vasovagal syncope (VVS) before it occurs.

      In simple terms, this indicates that your watch can alert you that you are about to faint.

      What is vasovagal syncope, and why is it important?

      Vasovagal syncope occurs when there is a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure, often due to stress, leading to loss of consciousness. Up to 40% of individuals experience this at some point in their lives, with one-third facing recurrent episodes.

      Professor Junhwan Cho from the Department of Cardiology at Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital explains, “An early warning could provide patients with time to assume a safe position or seek assistance, significantly lowering the risk of secondary injuries.”

      How does the Galaxy Watch predict fainting?

      The research team conducted tests on 132 patients with suspected VVS symptoms. Using a Galaxy Watch 6 with a PPG sensor, they analyzed heart rate variability data using an AI algorithm.

      The results were remarkable. The model accurately predicted fainting episodes up to 5 minutes in advance, achieving an 84.6% accuracy and 90% sensitivity. These findings were published in the European Heart Journal Digital Health, marking the first study to demonstrate that a commercial smartwatch can perform this function.

      The Apple Watch features fall detection that alerts trusted contacts when you fall and don’t respond. In contrast, the Galaxy Watch 6 appears to surpass this by warning users before they faint, allowing them to take preventative measures to avoid injuries from a fall.
