This indicates that the competition for AI assistants is broadening well beyond Amazon's self-made devices.
Amazon has officially rolled out its AI assistant, Alexa+, across devices produced by other brands. Alongside the introduction of its Lifestyle Ultra speakers, Bose has announced that Alexa+ will be integrated into its range of speakers and soundbars in the United States.
This marks a first for any audio brand outside of Amazon. Notably, the rollout applies to both new and existing Bose products.
What capabilities does Alexa+ offer on a Bose speaker?
It offers quite a lot. Alexa+ can perform all the functions it provides on Amazon’s own smart speaker lineup, including comprehending natural language conversations, which enables various applications.
For example, Alexa+ on Bose speakers can create mood-based playlists, search for vaguely remembered songs based on your limited recollection of them, manage other smart home speakers and devices, make dinner reservations, explore recipes, and even reorder household essentials from Amazon.
All of these tasks can be completed through voice commands, eliminating the need to use your smartphone. However, there is a minor downside: while Alexa+ is free for all Prime members, it comes with a monthly fee of $19.99 for others.
Which Bose products will receive this upgrade?
In addition to the newly released Lifestyle Ultra speakers, Alexa+ will be accessible on a wide array of existing Bose devices already available in the market. However, you will need to activate it through Amazon’s Alexa page.
This includes the Bose Smart Soundbar (models 300, 600, 900), Portable Smart Speaker, Home Speaker (models 300, 350, 500), Soundbar (models 500, 550, 700), and Music Amplifier. While the Lifestyle collection will gain access to the AI assistant starting May 15, Alexa+ is already active on all other compatible speakers.
It appears that Amazon is prioritizing platform growth over hardware limitations to expand its presence rather than restricting the AI assistant solely to Echo devices. This strategy will likely bolster the company's ability to compete with Google’s Gemini and Apple’s Siri in a wider device ecosystem.
