This indicates that the competition among AI assistants is expanding beyond Amazon’s own devices.
Amazon has officially extended its AI assistant, Alexa+, beyond its own hardware. In conjunction with the launch of its Lifestyle Ultra speakers, Bost announced that Alexa+ will be integrated into its range of speakers and soundbars throughout the United States.
This marks a first for any audio brand outside of Amazon. What’s particularly fascinating is that the rollout applies to both new and existing Bose devices.
What functionalities does Alexa+ offer on a Bose speaker?
A considerable amount, in fact. It can perform all the tasks it has managed on Amazon’s first-party smart speakers, including comprehending natural language conversations, which enables various possibilities.
For example, Alexa+ on Bose speakers can generate playlists based on mood, track down vaguely remembered songs based on the limited information you recall, manage other smart home speakers or devices, make dining reservations, provide recipe details, and even reorder everyday household items from Amazon.
All these capabilities can be accessed through voice commands, eliminating the need to navigate your smartphone. However, there is a slight downside: while the Alexa+ service is complimentary for Prime members, it costs $19.99 per month for others.
Which Bose devices will receive this upgrade?
In addition to the newly released Lifestyle Ultra speakers, Alexa+ will be made available across a variety of existing Bose products in the market. However, you need to activate it through Amazon’s Alexa page.
Devices compatible with Alexa+ include the Bose Smart Soundbar (models 300, 600, 900), Portable Smart Speaker, Home Speaker (models 300, 350, 500), Soundbar (models 500, 550, 700), and Music Amplifier. Although the Lifestyle lineup will gain access to the AI assistant starting May 15, Alexa+ is already operational on all other compatible speakers.
It seems Amazon is prioritizing platform expansion over hardware by broadening its presence rather than confining the AI assistant to Echo devices. This approach will likely enhance its competitiveness against Google’s Gemini and Apple’s Siri across a wider range of devices.
