There is no shortage of messaging applications available today. The last ten years have provided an overwhelming number of options, mainly because smartphones required a solution superior to traditional SMS.
Both the App Store and Play Store are filled with apps that claim to transform communication. However, most of them have not succeeded. In reality, a messaging app’s success heavily relies on its user base, and many apps fail to reach that critical mass.
WhatsApp appears to be one of the few chat applications that has successfully crossed that threshold. What started in early 2009 as a small project by two former Yahoo engineers aimed at replacing SMS quickly resonated, amassing 250,000 users in its first year and expanding to 400 million users by the end of 2013.
Since being acquired by Facebook (now Meta) in 2014, WhatsApp has become the standard for cross-platform messaging globally, achieving over 5 billion downloads from the Google Play Store and 3 billion active monthly users.
What is WhatsApp?
At its core, WhatsApp serves as a chat app for sending messages to friends, similar to the SMS text messaging that almost all phones support. Nevertheless, it was designed to offer an upgrade over SMS, and understandably so.
SMS has limitations such as 160-character restrictions and no capability for media types beyond plain text. Its successor, MMS, enables small media exchanges like low-resolution images but is ineffective for videos and lacks features like read receipts and status updates.
WhatsApp wasn't the only app addressing this challenge. Apple introduced iMessage in 2011, and Google attempted various solutions before finally adopting the RCS messaging standard, which now supports rich media, read receipts, and other features across Android devices.
However, Apple's solution is confined to its own ecosystem, and Google’s approaches have been slow to catch on. Recently, Apple added support for RCS messaging, but it remains in the early stages, and cross-platform messaging continues to be problematic.
Conversely, WhatsApp developed a platform-independent solution that functions seamlessly. It performs well on both iPhone and Android, has dedicated apps for Mac and Windows, and even offers a web client compatible with any modern browser.
Much of WhatsApp's popularity stems from its straightforwardness. Similar to iMessage, there are no accounts required; everything is linked to your phone number, eliminating the need for usernames or handles. Your profile consists of simply a name, a photo, and a 140-character "about" status.
Moreover, it extends beyond basic messaging. You can send high-resolution photos, videos, documents, audio messages, stickers, and GIFs. Group chats can include up to 1,024 participants, and you can place audio or video calls to any WhatsApp user around the globe. This mix of simplicity and functionality is precisely why billions utilize the app daily.
How to download WhatsApp
WhatsApp is available for download on both Android and iPhone; you can find it in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Keep in mind, WhatsApp doesn't have a version specifically designed for Android tablets or iPads. The app requires Android 4.1 or newer and iOS 12 or newer, so compatibility should not be an issue.
There are also desktop versions of WhatsApp for Windows and macOS, available through the Microsoft Store and Mac App Store, with low system requirements: Windows 10.1 or newer for Windows PCs and macOS 12.1 or newer for Macs.
How to get started with WhatsApp
While WhatsApp is compatible with iPhone, Android, macOS, and Windows, you will need to start on your smartphone. Remember that WhatsApp does not use user accounts in the traditional sense; instead, you sign up with your mobile phone number, which is validated via an SMS sent to your device. This requires you to have an active cellular plan, as WhatsApp cannot be set up on a Wi-Fi-only mobile device.
As a result, setting up WhatsApp is quite simple. Just open the app and follow the prompts, entering your mobile phone number when asked. This number becomes your WhatsApp "address" and account ID. An SMS will be sent to confirm ownership of that number.
If you are on an Android device, WhatsApp usually detects this SMS automatically and will proceed with the registration. For iPhone users, you will need to enter the six-digit code manually or tap the autofill option above the keyboard, similar to how SMS-based two-factor authentication works in other apps.
Once your phone number is registered, WhatsApp will guide you through a few more prompts to request access to your contacts and photos, after which you’ll be all set. Granting WhatsApp access to your contact list—although optional—will display a list of contacts who have also registered for WhatsApp.
