AI-generated content is transforming audio platforms into factories of low-quality offerings.
AI content has already inundated video streams, gaming discussions, software development, and search results. Now, this same low-effort machine-produced output is beginning to invade the podcasting space.
While music often dominates discussions about low-quality AI content, the issue with podcasts may be less visible and more challenging to resolve. AI tools can now create, upload, and even monetize complete shows much quicker than traditional podcast studios.
Is podcasting on the brink of becoming another factory for low-quality content?
A Bloomberg report highlights the rapid spread of this trend. According to the Podcast Index, 10,871 new podcast feeds were established in just about nine days, with approximately 4,243, or 39%, likely being created by AI. One AI podcast startup claims it now has over 10,000 active shows, having launched 877 new shows in just 48 hours.
Podcasting becomes particularly susceptible to this issue at such a scale because content discovery operates differently compared to music. A low-quality AI song can be skipped almost instantly, whereas finding podcasts often relies on search, recommendations, and trust. If numerous machine-generated shows fill the feeds, listeners might face a more arduous task in discovering genuine hosts, original journalism, or meaningful conversations.
This trend is already evident in other formats impacted by AI. Video platforms are grappling with an influx of low-quality AI uploads while also promoting AI tools for creators. The gaming industry has seen backlash over AI-generated graphics, with some gamers labeling certain AI visual features as subpar. A similar dilemma exists in coding; while AI can assist developers in writing code more rapidly, it also leads to an increase in bugs, inadequate solutions, security vulnerabilities, and additional review requirements. In the podcasting realm, concerns extend beyond mere volume to include how easily that content can be monetized.
Who gains from the automation of podcasts?
The straightforward monetization aspect elevates the issue of low-quality podcasting beyond just a concern about content quality. Some hosting services permit free podcasts to access advertising marketplaces with minimal scrutiny, allowing AI-generated shows to profit from downloads even if the content is insubstantial or inadequately reviewed. One platform shares 60% of ad revenue with creators, while another states it can suspend ads or eliminate shows if deemed of poor quality.
Apple Podcasts has begun requiring creators to disclose when a significant portion of a show uses AI. In contrast, Spotify relies on broader policies against misleading content and hasn't yet implemented a specific policy regarding AI podcasts. This situation creates a trust dilemma for listeners and advertisers, as AI has simplified audio production while complicating verification processes.
