For only $3, Google’s magic stick can rejuvenate your outdated PC.
If your old laptop is gathering dust, this could be the simplest $3 you'll spend all year.
If your outdated laptop has been running slowly or sitting unused, Google might have an unexpectedly affordable solution. The company has partnered with Back Market, a well-known platform for refurbished electronics, to introduce the ChromeOS Flex USB Kit.
For only $3, you'll receive a USB stick pre-loaded with ChromeOS Flex – Google’s free, lightweight operating system, along with easy-to-follow guides and video tutorials to assist you through the process.
With Microsoft officially concluding support for Windows 10 last October, millions of users are faced with a decision – spend a fortune on a new device or continue using an increasingly insecure machine. This $3 kit is Google’s response to that dilemma.
What does ChromeOS Flex do, and why is it worth considering?
ChromeOS Flex is a simplified version of the operating system designed for Chromebooks, aimed specifically at revitalizing older hardware. It can operate on various PCs and even some Macs, functioning well on devices that would typically struggle.
The installation process is quite simple. You turn off your laptop, insert the USB stick, boot the device, and install the operating system from the drive. The kit provides all the necessary instructions, and since ChromeOS Flex is free, the $3 merely covers the physical drive and guides.
An initiative focused on sustainability
Google
Creating a new laptop has a considerable carbon footprint, and Google points out that ChromeOS generally consumes around 19% less energy compared to similar systems on average.
The USB drive is reusable and participates in a waste-compensation program through a partner named Closing the Loop, which collects and recycles an equivalent amount of e-waste for every drive sold.
This is currently a pilot initiative with a limited number of kits available. Google indicates that more will be produced if there is significant demand.
You can also download ChromeOS Flex for free and make your own USB drive, but the kit makes the process more straightforward for everyday users. Before ordering the USB kit, it’s advisable to confirm if your device is listed among the compatible models.
