Your IP address reveals more information than you realize.
Your location data can disclose much more than you think. It not only identifies where you are currently but can also track your daily habits, the locations you frequent, and even when your home is likely vacant.
To illustrate what you may be exposing, NordVPN has introduced My Location, a complimentary browser tool that quickly displays your actual location as well as the virtual location visible to any website you visit.
What distinguishes your actual location from your virtual one?
Your actual location is derived from device-oriented methods such as GPS or your browser’s geolocation API. This data is what apps typically seek when requesting location access. Your virtual location, however, stems from your IP address. This identifier is tied to your internet activity, which websites generally use to estimate the origin of your connection.
These two locations can vary greatly, and recognizing this difference is crucial. Websites can utilize your location for targeted advertisements or regional price variations, presenting you with different prices depending on your location. In more severe instances, a timestamped location history could enable surveillance or stalking.
NordVPN's CTO, Marijus Briedis, succinctly states: “Once this data is revealed or shared excessively, it can be used for profiling, targeting, and other reasons much beyond the initial intent of collection.”
How can you safely utilize NordVPN’s My Location tool?
To access Nord’s free tool, visit the My Location page and click on “Test Location Access.” Your browser will prompt you to share your location with NordVPN. Select “Allow this time” to grant the tool temporary access to your browser’s geolocation API. It will display your physical location alongside your IP-based virtual location.
Regarding privacy, you can rest easy as NordVPN assures that it does not log or store any location data revealed by the tool. In addition to using the tool, Briedis advises regularly reviewing your app permissions, such as permitting location access only while using an app actively, and disabling geotagging in your camera settings.
While a VPN cannot prevent GPS tracking, it can hide your virtual location by altering the IP address that websites detect. To start protecting your virtual footprint, consider exploring some of the best free VPNs available.
