      DC has released another trailer for the Supergirl movie, and if you were anticipating something significantly different, well… it's best to temper your expectations. The film features Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El and includes elements like space bars, emotional trauma, and a dog in danger. Supergirl is set to debut in theaters on June 26, 2026, directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) with a script by Ana Nogueira (The Vampire Diaries).

      The trailer quickly establishes its premise, heavily relying on the source material. Supergirl is a live-action version of the critically acclaimed 2022 comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. The storyline closely mirrors the comic, featuring Supergirl (Kara) on a revenge-fueled journey through space alongside her faithful dog, Krypto.

      Kara Zor-El, portrayed by Alcock, encounters Ruthye (Eve Ridley), an alien girl seeking revenge on Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), a villainous pirate-assassin who killed her father. Their initial encounter with Krem doesn’t go well, as he shoots Krypto with a poison dart, leaving the beloved super-dog with just three days to live unless Kara can find the antidote.

      Thus, it fundamentally becomes a John Wick scenario. Krypto serves not just as an emotional support figure, but as the catalyst for action. Someone has harmed the dog, and now the entire universe is about to face the consequences. Kara and Ruthye team up, journey between planets, battle space pirates, and meet Jason Momoa’s Lobo – a boisterous, reckless motorcycle-riding bounty hunter who isn’t in the original comic but appears to be a fun addition.

      The cast also includes David Krumholtz as Kara’s father Zor-El, Emily Beecham as her mother Alura In-Ze, and a cameo from David Corenswet reprising his role as Superman/Kal-El. The trailer effectively showcases the action, presenting a large scale, a dynamic vibe, and Alcock seems well-equipped to carry this film. However, once the initial excitement wanes, a lingering thought arises.

      Wait, does this feel like Guardians of the Galaxy again?

      Things get a bit uncomfortable here. While the trailer is visually appealing, it doesn’t appear to be particularly original.

      Supergirl is the first major DCU film that James Gunn isn’t directing, yet it resembles the first MCU film he actually helmed. From the beginning, the atmosphere resonates with Guardians of the Galaxy. Gillespie’s interpretation of Kara Zor-El seems less like a new direction for the DCU and more like a remix of Gunn’s previous work.

      To begin with, Supergirl strolls around in a trench coat, wearing orange headphones, and carrying the emotional burden of a destroyed homeworld. Does that ring a bell? Star-Lord might be feeling a bit of déjà vu! Both characters grapple with past traumas – Kara with the destruction of Krypton and Peter Quill with his mother’s death – and both feel the need to present themselves as the coolest figure in whatever alien dive bar they find themselves in.

      Then there are the alien landscapes. Imagine scrappy space settings, neon-lit bars, chaotic worlds resembling junkyards, paired with a soundtrack that sounds like it came right from someone’s retro playlist. The aesthetic shares that same charming disorder that made Guardians stand out in 2014.

      Interestingly, what might be slipping through the cracks is what made Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow visually stunning in the comics. Bilquis Evely’s artwork was characterized by a sharp, dynamic energy, while Matheus Lopes’ vibrant color scheme, filled with bold oranges, teal greens, sickly golds, and strong pinks, gave it a unique appearance. While the film hints at that color scheme, it opts for a more muted and unclear presentation. Visually, it ends up resembling a Guardians sequel rather than adapting one of the most striking comics from recent years.

      Additionally, there’s the inclusion of a CGI animal companion — as no space adventure seems complete without one. Rocket had his time, and now it's Krypto’s moment. With Lobo’s character, the Guardians of the Galaxy vibe deepens. A motley crew, a found-family theme, and a CGI animal at the emotional core; it’s a formula that worked seamlessly for Gunn in 2014. Replicating it so early in his DCU journey may be risky.

      And yes, the premise of “journeying to the ends of the universe to save your dog” is unmistakably reminiscent of John Wick in space. Which is entertaining! But it’s borrowed entertainment.
