      Typing on an imagined keyboard suspended in mid-air may seem impressive until fatigue sets in. This is the experience with many AR (augmented reality) and MR (mixed reality) headsets available today, where users either struggle with handheld controllers or maintain their hands in the air for extended periods, leading to discomfort.

      Researchers at Tohoku University believe they’ve discovered an improved solution. They have created a system that transforms any flat surface into a touch input area for AR and MR headsets, requiring no additional sensors or special markers and involving no setup.

      How does it function?

      When a fingertip presses against a hard surface, the skin briefly turns white, a phenomenon known as the blanching effect. Researchers have devised a technique to detect this effect using the cameras of the headset.

      The research team trained an AI model to recognize this color change in real time. When the camera identifies the blanching effect, it registers a touch input that corresponds to whatever is shown on the surface within the AR setting.

      "This research indicates that common surfaces around us, such as walls, desks, or partitions, can serve as touch input areas," stated Guanghan Zhao, who led the study. "Furthermore, this method requires no specialized sensors, markers, or extra devices, making it accessible for everyone."

      Is it effective?

      User studies conducted during the research indicated that the system consistently detected touch inputs on a variety of common surface materials, and participants performed interaction tasks accurately.

      "Our main goal was to create technology that enables touch input on everyday physical surfaces for AR and MR without needing specialized hardware," explained Guanghan. Plus, resting your fingers on a surface is far more comfortable than keeping your hands lifted.

      The findings were shared at the 33rd IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces in South Korea last week, and the paper has been accepted for publication in the IEEE Computer Society Digital Library.
