PUBG's top-down experiment has ended before it truly began.
PUBG: Blindspot is officially closing down today, March 30. The announcement reveals that the game will end before it can leave early access, with Krafton stating that the services will cease at 6:00 PM KST.
Though it’s a disappointing conclusion, Blindspot didn't seem like a complete failure. In fact, it managed to find a niche audience despite being a multiplayer experiment.
Why is it being shut down?
Unlike the main PUBG format, Blindspot adopted a top-down tactical shooter style, focusing on tighter, more strategic 5v5 gameplay instead of the typical large-scale battle royale action. This unique angle distinguished it from other shooters, particularly for players drawn to a more compact, strategy-oriented game within the PUBG universe (similar to Rainbow Six Siege).
Clearly, some players appreciated it. The game maintained a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam, even though it struggled to retain a consistent player base.
Liked but not widely adopted
Krafton's statement is straightforward. The company indicated that despite efforts to enhance the gaming experience, it no longer believes it can “meaningfully deliver an engaging experience through Early Access.”
While this language is typical for shutdowns, the key issue appears to be lacking player retention. The game faced challenges such as low player counts, lengthy matchmaking times, and dwindling momentum, which are essential for the viability of live-service games.
A brief but enjoyable experience
PUBG: Blindspot entered early access only last month, meaning this shutdown occurs in less than two months. The game offered a distinct aesthetic, and many players genuinely seemed to appreciate its approach. However, in the realm of multiplayer games, being “pretty good” often isn’t sufficient. Despite facing criticism for server issues and confusing controls, there was potential.
Success can sometimes depend on timing, player numbers, and a bit of luck. Unfortunately, Blindspot fell short in all these areas.
