Your upcoming Galaxy Z Fold may feature a crease that's 20% shallower.
Samsung Display showcased a next-generation foldable OLED at CES 2026 that reduces crease depth by roughly 20% compared to the 2025 model, potentially resulting in less glare and shadow on the fold line during use.
During the event, Samsung Display highlighted a foldable OLED that could make the crease on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 less of an issue in everyday usage. The main point is that the crease appears about 20% shallower than that of the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
This modification is significant since the crease is often the first element noticed on a large, bright foldable screen. It can appear as a dark line in videos and games and may reflect bright light when illuminated in the hinge area.
However, this improvement is not yet confirmed for the next Galaxy Fold. According to ZDNet Korea, Samsung’s MX division is expected to make a decision by the end of Q1 2026, considering the potential cost increases associated with this new design.
Addressing the crease's materials
The enhancement goes beyond merely tightening the hinge. The advancements occur within the display layers that must flex thousands of times without becoming permanently warped.
One of the changes focuses on the optical clear adhesive used between the layers. This is intended to allow the stack to bend and return to its original shape more smoothly during folding, minimizing the depth of the crease over time.
Additionally, there is mention of a more robust reinforcement layer. Instead of a plastic PET film, Samsung Display is moving towards using a metal plate to provide firmer support beneath the display.
Caution for Apple fans
Whenever Samsung Display reveals new foldable technology, speculation about Apple quickly follows. This report suggests that this particular panel would not be suitable for Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
The reasoning involves differing reinforcement methods beneath the screen. Consequently, even if the technology is impressive, it should be interpreted as Samsung advancing its foldables rather than a sneak preview of Apple's hardware.
Pay attention to the Q1 decision
If the crease on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a major concern for you, the crucial date isn't any launch rumor, but the decision window. By late March 2026, we should have more clarity on whether Samsung is prepared to bear the increased costs associated with producing this thinner crease panel.
If you're looking to purchase soon, explore the best available foldables if you can't wait for the next Samsung flagship. If you're able to hold out, monitor supply chain updates and any signs that the Fold 8 display stack might undergo significant revisions.
